How do you make history in a music industry that is constantly becoming more and more competitive? How do you remain original when so many styles of hip-hop keep surfacing? How do you rock clubs and still deliver lyrics that stimulate the soul? It’s simple really! You close your eyes click record, take a breath, and spit your soul on the microphone. Very few lyricists can do this and not lose connection with the pulse of the listener. Southern District not only accomplishes this, they master the art.
Some may say uniting four different people from four different parts of the south may clash. Despite being from four very different backgrounds, the musical bonds they have created have left an emotionally intense mark on the Hip/Hop culture. On their up and coming album, one can hear how their remarkably different styles give the consumer a number of topics not only they can listen but also relate to. It’s a surprisingly magnificent blend of Hip/Hop that goes much further than the normal impoverished group of African American Males that had to conduct criminal activities to survive in today’s substandard economy. Instead of following the trend of “Gangster Rap” they chose to stay on topics the average person can relate to which they like to refer to it as “Talk to EM Music”.
It all started when Rico “CO” Lane performed at a talent show in Kirkuk AB, Iraq and was notice by Glenn “Profa-C” Gerald for his ability to move a crowd with his energetic stage performance. Profa-C felt with his lyrical abilities and CO’s gifts to not only perform but to come up with catchy hooks they could take over the Hip/Hop game. From that day on they begin to make song after song together with a vision of being one of the greatest Hip/Hop Groups the industry has ever seen. CO being from Atlanta, GA and Profa-C coming from The District of Columbia they came up with the name Southern District.
So they went fourth with this dream putting on many shows to display their musical talent and build the morale of their fellow peers in Kirkuk, Iraq. One of the many presentations was a knock off of the Television show “Showtime At the Apollo”, which they called “Apollo Night” was the biggest attraction to the Air base bringing in over 300 people beating out the Air Force Band “Tops in Blues”. Traman “Mr. Realitte” Woodley was amazed at the progress Southern District was making and wanted to be a part of the movement. He was welcomed with open arms due to his unique style of raping being from New Orleans Louisiana.
Southern District’s first year together produced their share of ups and down, due to their commitment to the United States Air Force. Profa-C was sent back to Iraq shortly after his return to America and they all shared the struggle of trying to put up the money and time that is needed to put together an album. Jacory “Royce” Royster approach Co with an interest on collaborating on a couple of tracks while the group was apart. In the mist of conceiving new music Co invited Royce to be a part of the Southern District team because he was also from the south (Texas) and he admired his ability to be able to quickly put a 16 bar verse together. Royce accepted the invitation and the rest was history.
Southern District eagerly worked within their limits the military bestowed upon them. Although they were all from the South they had the ability to deliver music that people from any corner of the world could relate to. They prove their ability to adapt to their situation with their single “We in the Tuc” a tribute to Tucson AZ, the city they’re based out of. Still staying true to where they are from Southern District quickly realize “where you at” matters just as much. They went on to build a name for themselves in a land that was very foreign and different from what they are use to. Performing at local night clubs (Club Sharks and Northshores) and Tucson Public Access Television Station landed them the opportunity to open up for Rap Artist Spice 1 who was impressed with their ability to move a crowd that is not use to a “Southern Style” of Rap. The “Buzz” they got from the Spice 1 concert landed them another gig opening up for Rap Legend DJ Quik. Although they didn’t have the chance to meet DJ Quik, they had over 500 Tucson AZ residents screaming “We in Tha Tuc” before they left the stage.
Southern District is finding their audience the best way possible; by being out there in the streets one on one with the people and delivering a diverse style of Hip/Hop that the average Joe can relate to. The foundation of Southern District is the dedication, love, and commitment to music that each and every one of the members possesses. In 2009, Southern District (with the release of their Debut Album) will seek out more and more fans who want to feel like the music they’re listening to is a narration of their life. So make sure you pay attention. Ladies and Gentlemen……. This is a Southern District Presentation!
