Crossing Borders, this is the Credo of Stephan Athanas, as well as the Argovian chamber orchestra under the direction of Cristoforo Spagnuolo. While the Argovian chamber orchestra already gained experiences within the range of jazz with composers such as Keith Jarrett and Astor Piazzolla, Stephan Athanas is a sound traveler between Arab and European music. A trespass beyond the border north - south thus, (or we should call them south - north?), with in this frontier already experienced musician, Stephan Athanas, and its ContempArabic Jazz Ensemble (CAJE) is undertaken here. Samiha Ben Said as singer, Quanûnist and musicologist enriches this music with her breath-teaking voice. The term SOUK stands thereby for meeting different cultures and (tone) languages. Experiences, opinions, become exchanged and discussed in the Souk. Parameters of the Arab music (Maqam, improvisation, Arab Rhythms, Arab quartertone scales), the jazz (improvisation, Groove) come together with the orchestral Sound of the Argovian Chamber Orchestra in the Souk here. Stephan Athanas sets, with the particularly for these project written works, the Travel route of this border expedition. He involves the musicians in a musical adventure. The ContempArabic Jazz Ensemble (CAJE) undertakes such transnational Expeditions in the geographical as in the musical sense already since 1996. (Concerts in Egypt, Tunisia, Greece, Switzerland, Spain, Czech Republic, France, Marocco.)
