On this long-awaited new album, Real Men Do, Christopher Williams reveals that he has learned a lot since he made his last record. Indeed, he has spent much of the last several years traveling inward, questioning himself and everything he once took for granted. His image as a sexy hip-hop crooner may always be with him, but Christopher wants to introduce the world to the heart behind the voice and face.
Real Men Do is Christopher’s first album for Renegade Records, and it is also his first time as Executive Producer. As he explains, “I had a real clear idea of what I wanted this album to be, and this was the best way of seeing that through at every level.†In all, the album took well over a year to make. Recording in New York and Los Angeles, Christopher took a focused but unhurried approach, “holding out for better†at every turn. “My goal was to find cool people to collaborate with, to write great songs with great melodies and lyrics.†Hiring and working with writers and producers such as DJ Quik, Jellyroll, Mawduku, Chinwa, Marcos Q, Brian Wilson, and Niles Rivers, Christopher explored the boundaries of soul, mixing Latin, R&B, hip-hop into a smooth blend al his own.
Real Men Do flows from song to song, adding up to a very satisfying musical experience. It is also marked by a deep consciousness, imbued with respect for love and women. Says Christopher, “My last albums, Changes and Not A Perfect Man, were more direct, more like ‘Let’s get it on.’ This album is about what should be going on. It’s more romantic, more mature. In a lot of ways, it’s more about what a woman wants to hear.
The first single for release is “Danceâ€, which Christopher describes as “A funky dance grooveâ€. Other standout tracks include “Best Loveâ€, “Mary Juana†and “Somebody.†He is particularly proud of the title track, which sums up a lot of his personal growth. As Williams puts it, “I’m not perfect, but I’ve learned to look past the imperfections in myself and focus on what I do well. Everything else takes care of itself.â€
This modest approach belies Williams’ hard work sine making his recording debut in 1987 with the CW album. In 1991, he made his acting debut in New Jack City, and his single from the soundtrack, “Dreamin,’†turned gold on its way to number 1. Two years later, Christopher released Changes, which added “Every Little Thing†and “Come Go With Me†to his collection of hits.
In the current musical landscape, Christopher Williams is all the more remarkable for his devotion to song craft. His music comes straight form his heart, and though he may not be a perfect man, Christopher has perfectly extraordinary talents. Real Men Do stands as a literal record of this man’s quest for peace and learning.
