Very Early Anne
Anne Price live at Hunter College in the Bronx
1965 – 1966

I attended Hunter College in the Bronx, New York City’s northernmost borough, from 1964 to 1968. My name at the time was Anne Siegel. I have since become Anne Price, while the Bronx campus of Hunter has since become Lehman College.

Twice a year the college held the Hunter Hoot, a folk music concert presented by and for its students. These concerts featured genres that became popular in the Great Folk Revival of the 1960s – bluegrass, traditional ballads, Gospel, the works of singer-songwriters (especially Bob Dylan and Tom Paxton), and songs from the repertoires of Joan Baez and of Peter, Paul, and Mary.

I selected these songs from recordings of Hunter Hoots that took place in November 1965, April 1966, and November 1966. I was 19 years old during the first two, and had just turned 20 by the last. I had already been playing guitar and singing folk songs since the age of 12, but the Hunter Hoots were my first performances before real audiences. The experience was intoxicating.

How does it feel listening to my young self from the perspective of more than four decades? Hard to describe. I was more of a soprano then, and I innocently – perhaps naively – sang with feeling about things I had yet to experience. People compared me to Joan Baez, and they still do. I learned a lot from listening to Joan, but I have learned much more from my own experiences since then.

Ray Frank did a fine job of backing me up on guitar on five of these songs, and Gene Yellin''s Bluegrass band helped me on Colours (probably, though he can''t remember doing it.)

I am deeply grateful to Rick Ohayon for making these recordings, and to Barry Schorr for sending them to me.
