John Bartus & Storm Watch release Live at the 2009 Marathon Seafood Festival CD

Florida Keys rockers John Bartus & Storm Watch are releasing their new CD, Live at the 2009 Marathon Seafood Festival. While Keys residents are getting to know Storm Watch (drummer Glenn Faast, keyboardist Marc Davis, and bassist/guitarist Christian Davis) through a series of successful gigs, most people haven’t a clue that bandleader and guitarist John Bartus used to be Mayor of the City of Marathon. Bartus is currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of his first gig (as well as living here) in the Keys.

Having traded the gavel back for the guitar, Bartus leads his musical cohorts into a selection of rock classics combined with John’s and Marc’s original songs. “We wanted to make this CD into a document of our live shows,” Bartus explains. “What better way to do that than record one of our performances?” All the songs on the CD were recorded at the band’s recent appearance at the Original Marathon Seafood Festival in March of this year. Cover songs on the CD include challenging selections from groups like Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, and Toto. “We like to play the great songs that other bands aren’t playing,” Bartus said.

Original tunes include four John Bartus songs featuring the standout “Victim of Gravity” and his dedication to Keys commercial fishermen, “Captain of His Own Destiny.” Marc Davis contributes his soulful ballad, “Going Home.” Glenn Faast’s solid drumming anchors the band, and he gets to stretch out on an extended solo in “Black Magic Woman.” 19-year old Christian Davis plays great bass throughout (especially on “Rosanna”), and picks up the lead guitar for “Watchtower.”

25 Years and Counting...
2009 marks the 25th anniversary of John Bartus playing music and living in the Florida Keys. As well as averaging over 200 performances each year since 1984, John also found time to be a Mayor, City Council member, Chamber President, radio personality, record producer and session musician, newspaper columnist and founder, and voice talent/broadcast producer. Unlike most career paths, however, music always remained John’s “day job.” His longevity and versatility have resulted in a musical career that is still getting stronger and more vital with each passing year.
Along the way, John hooked up with some talented players and the result is what you have here. Drummer Glenn Faast is a veteran of several Keys bands (at least three previous ones with John) and is regarded as one of the finest drummers in South Florida. Keyboardist/vocalist/songwriter Marc Davis combines his jazz, R&B, and gospel roots with heartfelt songs and a soulful voice you’ll never forget. Bassist/guitarist Christian Davis has a level of talent and an understanding of music that players three times his age wish they had. Christian will go far, and we’re lucky to have him here on this CD.
The songs on this CD were recorded live at the 2009 Original Marathon Seafood Festival. Unlike many “live” albums, these tracks are the actual live tracks recorded at the Festival. Nothing was “fixed;” no mistakes were replaced with new tracks. What you hear here is exactly what went down on the afternoon of March 14, 2009.
The mix of songs is typical of what you would hear at a Storm Watch performance: great rock classics combined with John’s and Marc’s original songs. Imagine yourself on a breezy, sunny afternoon in the Florida Keys, put on this CD, and take yourself there...
