You know how it is...you take your guitar amp into that hip music shop to get it fixed, but you never really interact with the guy who''s fixing it. Sequestered alone in the back, he''s taking it apart and putting it back together, both your amp and, as it turns out, the songs in his head. His name is Patrick Kauffman and this is the story of the unstoppable ride that resulted in his debut record, On The Mysterious Other.
First Stop: Brooklyn - As perfectly-realized as it was in his mind, Kauffman''s labor of love took years to record and produce, because sometimes reality gets in the way. Armed with his worked-and-reworked songs, Kauffman chose Brooklyn''s Marlborough Farms studio to record. After laying down the instrumentation almost single-handedly with producers Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor) and Bill Wells, Kauffman gathered seasoned musicians to fill out the sound with piano and strings (arranged by Loser''s Lounge founder Joe McGinty). All he needed was the vocals. Easier said than done. After years as a behind-the-scenes musician with homemade tapes, Kauffman wasn''t quite ready to step into the lead singer role. Besides, he wanted more time, money and material to create the record he wanted. So, he put the album on the back burner to spend time playing drums in the Brooklyn band Heavy Creatures and create his own line of custom guitar amps.
Second Stop: jail - Amidst the hem and haw of the 2004 Republican National Convention, Kauffman attended a peaceful protest, but was quickly arrested and thrown into a makeshift, chemical-filled jail. After a lost weekend in the clink, an inspired Kauffman was released and quickly wrote the record''s finale, "In Solidarity" on a Greyhound bus. With a renewed sense of purpose and feelings of continuity toward the downtrodden, Kauffman was ready to finish his album.
Final Stop: Philly - A guiding hand was needed. Kaufmanns voice was there, but he needed a like-minded pro to help. A change of scenery was needed, so Kauffman headed to Philadelphias Miner Street studios to work with one of rocks best melody makers, fellow vintage amp-lover Brian McTear (Matt Pond PA). What resulted from this union was clear: Kauffman was finally able to fully realize the album he envisioned years earlier. Patience, time and experience guided this project through some quiet moments, dark times and finally to a perfectly orchestrated stop. On The Mysterious Other had arrived, right on time.
