Details:
Kyven, pronounced K''I''ven, is Kyle Frank and Steven Scott.

Drawing likeness to The Chemical Brothers and Crystal Method for their intricate tracks, a European pop sensibility of Ian Van Dahl and Duran Duran and smoothly orchestrated and produced male vocals, Kyven is a dance/pop collaboration that America can call its own. Kyle''s innocent yet powerful male vocal and Steven''s intricate synthesis create a synergy of stand-alone melodies and roof-shattering beats.

Not since the days of New Order, Dead Or Alive, A-Ha, and Erasure have male vocals blended as powerfully with the synthesizer. Kyven’s goal is to bring lyric power back to the pop world while taking full advantage of all that modern technology holds in synthesis and composition. “Every aspect of this music is created by Kyven,” says Steven, “Beats, harmony, concept, writing and performance all put together. It is such a great feeling to know that these parts can meld and form something bigger than what Kyle or I could ever achieve alone.”

“We are trying something here” Kyle says, “We are attempting to bring dance/pop music out of isolation. This music is so powerful, fun, and intricate but sometimes it’s disregarded because it lacks a melody and message that people can really get behind. There is no better combination than a song you can sing along to and dance along to. I get totally lost in mid-song!”

There is something gravitational about Kyle Frank. One might say the fact that he is 6’6” is enough to ensure he always stands out but there is something much deeper. There is a combination of commitment and expression that Kyle possesses in performance and recordings. His eyes are engaging and his message is steadfast. These strengths rise out of a long road of taking the back seat in the performance world. “I spent a lot of time trying to fit in, to seem normal and to conform.” Kyle’s lyrics are a break from that insecurity as they stem right from the heart.

Kyle brings to vocal performance a lifetime of stage and recording experience. He was the resident child soloist growing up in a Presbyterian church, won Shakespeare monologue and directing competitions in southern California, received honors for writing and performance in San Antonio, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Boston and twice in Tokyo and landed several jobs in Regional theatre before leaving Los Angeles for college in Boston.

It was there at college that Kyle first dove wholeheartedly into writing. He penned and recorded several songs, working and performing alongside musicians from all over the world and picking up new and innovative techniques. Out of college and in the fast life of New York City, Kyle has been inundated with new sounds, emotions and content for writing. Exploration in a metropolitan setting is the foundation for Kyven’s current sound. “Both Steven and I are young, we don’t pretend to know everything, we just know what sounds and ideas we like.”

Kyle’s lyrics are purposely broad: not overly analytical, challenging, or edgy but his lyric value works in tandem with Steven’s music to get a stronger message across. “This music is about how things sound, how melody blends with a track and how we can pull emotion from people, get them to see things and feel things that we all go through.” Tracks such as “Wrong About You” and “Not For Long” are testaments to this style of writing. “The biggest thrill is giving up something to others and having them say, ‘yes, you get me, that is exactly how I feel.’”

A combination of an inherent love of a beautiful melody and the influence of over 15 years of being a pianist has crafted Steven Scott’s compositions. His production style follows that same blend; arpeggios, intricate chord voicings, and personal nuances contribute to his unique sound and style. Whether sitting behind the mixer or a piano, his love for creating music is evident. A man who moves at a rapid pace, Steven relentlessly works until his standards are met. His music is no exception. “I spend days, weeks, months perfecting a track to sound and represent all the emotion and dedication the song was created for and then selflessly release it to the world. To me, there are few things as humbling and rewarding.”

Steven’s performances, recordings, concerts, and competitions soar into the hundreds. He became an icon pianist in his childhood community. From traveling competitions as keyboard player for jazz ensembles and pianist of his high school choir, to providing music for concerts, recordings, parties, and community events, Steven took advantage of every opportunity to grow and learn as a musician while remaining grateful for the countless opportunities to perform. He knew music was something he couldn’t part with and decided to leave Connecticut and head to college in Boston to pursue it.

College provided Steven the opportunity to not only continue playing, but to expand on the idea of creating and producing music. What started as simple sequences on a computer and synthesizer became mastered productions featured in live shows and on his College-Showcase CD. Kyven is an outlet for Steven to continue to produce and perform an ever-evolving style of music.

The music of Kyven is something very unique. Aside from the heavy pop and electronic production most tracks exhibit, there is a fundamental composition to every song. Whether it is a piano, exchange of melody between vocal and synthesizer, or counterpoint drum patterns, there are many qualities of the music and production that are key devices to Steven’s composing. “It’s always nice to sit at the piano and play any of the songs. People listening can’t get enough. I see “Kyven-Unplugged” in the works!” Songs like “Try” and “Not For Long” are examples of Steven’s intricate detail to how a piano interacts with a vocal melody, enhanced by sound design, and given a pulse with a drum pattern. “For me, the thrill is being able to take a dance track like ‘Don’t Ever Stop’ or ‘Hurt’ and strip it from the mega-production, play it instrumental on a piano and have a beautiful piece of music. That standard is something the songs of Kyven will never lose.”
