In the tradition of many great rockers, Kalen is an artist turned musician. She has sung and played the piano since she was a young girl growing up in Exeter, New Hampshire, writing songs on the piano before she understood what songwriting was. Always torn between the most successful form of self expression, Kalen oscillated between fine arts, acting and music. After completing a BA at Penn with a major in Fine Arts and a minor in Anthropology she felt the urgency of the music she had began writing privately the last two years of college and the desire to perform again after the college rock band she formed dis-banded. She moved to New York to pursue the dream. Kalen is taking music classes at the New School while working on a number of projects. This web-site is dedicated to her solo singer/songwriter work, songs that she performs at various venues in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Many of her more rock and soul driven songs are translated into a new and upcoming project with talented drummer/producer, Peter S. Lewis. She is also a member of a Brooklyn based rock and reggae band, Primordial Ooze.
Kalen draws from all of the music she has grown up listening to, all of which can be heard in her songs, from classic rock to the blues, soul, jazz and trip-hop. The originality of Kalen''s sound comes from her writing process in which the piano and melodies are simultaneously and seamlessly derived through organic improvisation. Kalen''s love for other languages and cultures shines through in her lyrics, which float from English to Spanish and Italian. "Kalen is a very promising singer and songwriter who brings in influences in her writing and music ranging from Pablo Naruda to Eric Satie," says Ishrat Ansari, owner of the West Village landmark, Caffe Vivaldi.
Kalen''s current solo focuses are on the beginning stages on a honky-tonk hip-hop EP with prolific producer, Phil Carroll of Recording Artist Development and promoting her debut solo album, "Fairy Tales, Fantasies & Other Mistakes."
