Katana Mantra is made from only the finest ingredients; four of Virginia’s premier instrumentalists, and one outlandish front man from the far reaches of upstate New York. Together, they take a variety of musical influences (rock, funk, R&B, jazz, progressive music, the list goes on...) and meld them into solid works of song craft. Mantra''s mission is to turn the world''s ears on to the sounds that they themselves love, and the stories
That they have to tell. To spread the love.

The seeds for what would become Katana Mantra were planted as early as 1993, when drummer Bubba Farmer met bassist John Davis at a high school battle of the bands. The two became friends and maintained contact, often jamming together with various other
Musicians, but kept busy with their own bands. In 1999, John Davis met a guitarist named Mike Davis, who was looking for musicians to start an original music project. While John himself was occupied with his own band,
Sataday Session, he knew that Bubba was also looking to start a new band. Sensing a good match, John arranged a jam for the three of them. The musical chemistry was immediately evident, and Bubba and Mike joined forces. With their first choice for bass, John, unavailable, they put an ad out. The answer came quickly from a bassist/vocalist named Ian Sutherland. He joined
Bubba and Mike to form a trio called Hypnosis. Although short lived, the music created for this lineup became the foundation for what was to come. Hypnosis''s last performance was part of a triple bill that featured Sataday
Session, with John Davis, and Mudhen, a trio featuring a drummer named Brian Lytle, also known as "Sideshow". Besides being a drummer, Lytle was also a
Classically trained vocalist, and an especially animated, unpredictable character. Mike and Bubba agreed that these qualities would make "Sideshow" an excellent front man, but, like John Davis; Lytle was tied to another band. Over the next couple of years, Bubba and Mike worked with several different Lineups, first changing the group name to the Katana Mantra Electric Orchestra, and then wisely shortening it to simply "Katana Mantra". In 2002, Lytle''s band broke up, and Mike and Bubba asked him to join Katana Mantra as Lead vocalist. The next year saw John Davis available to take over the Mantra bass slot. The dynamic between these four made for a powerhouse quartet that quickly began to garner a reputation not only for a forward-thinking musical direction, but as an exhilarating live act. In 2005, Memphis-based Heartbeat Productions was approached by Paramount to take over production on a live rock show to be preformed in all five of the company''s theme parks. The show was called "School Of Rock – Live in Concert”, and was associated with the Paramount motion picture of the same name. When Heartbeat needed the name of a Virginia act that could pull off such a show for Paramount''s King''s Dominion, they asked one of the state''s most celebrated musician/songwriters, Robin Thompson. Robin''s answer was Katana Mantra. Upon hearing one song preformed live by Mantra, Heartbeat said they had the job. The group spent the summer of 2005 in King''s Dominion’s Paramount Theatre performing the show before thousands of park visitors. In the show, Mantra was augmented with a keyboardist named Adam Hamil. Hamil, Who had just graduated from high school, was not only skilled in keyboards, but guitar, percussion, horns; up to thirty-some odd instruments. Impressed, not only by the young musician''s varied skills, but by his personal
demeanor, Mantra befriended Hamil, eventually asking him to join the group. Hamil accepted, and in the fall that year, the quintet recorded their first full length cd at Minimum Wage recording in Richmond, Va. With the mastering
Of the album done at In Your Ear Studios, the new recording is ready to hit the streets at the onset of 2006. Always ready to move forward, Katana Mantra has even begun putting together the material that will comprise the
Next full length recording, and begun plans to spread their live show far and wide throughout the year. So cock back a leg and arch your back, Ethel ...here comes the mighty Mantra!
