A wonderful cd of guitar based pop. If you long for sincere music free of the slick city sound, be sure to pick this up. The more you hear it, the better it gets. A must for pop purists. Pure, clean, and very clear.

Details:
I really don’t remember a time when I wasn’t playing an instrument or making up songs. I started on piano but switched to guitar to emulate my Dad and his heroes, Buddy Holly and Bob Dylan. My kid brother and I started fooling around with recording when I was nine (hooking two cassette recorders together to make tracks). When I was eleven, my Dad brought home a four-track recorder, ostensibly to make a tape of his songs. He let me “play with it”; my brother and I quickly recorded our first cassette of Elvis covers (The King Brothers Sing the King”), and it became the highest selling cassette at the People’s Food Coop of Ann Arbor! It also gained us an invitation to open for the local college radio station’s “bash” which led to further gigs around Ann Arbor, including opening for Jonathan Richman.

It seemed natural for my brother and me to start writing our own songs and we filled our second cassette with all original material and called it “No Covers.. We were home-schooled and lived on a farm out in the country so, as I continued to pick up instruments and recording gear, it made sense to just play them all myself and do all the recording. With plenty of support from the Ann Arbor community, (a reviewer described one of my songs as “the kind of great American pop tune Nick Lowe would have cut off his left hand to have written), my brother and I continued to perform and released three more cassettes. I still like a lot of these songs and have recently started incorporating them into my live act.

When my brother’s voice changed, he moved on to other things and I went more deeply into writing and recording. I released my first solo album in 1995. Titled “Part of the World”, I like how one reviewer described it as “Lindsay Buckingham on a good day.” I followed that with “You Know Me” and now “Overdue”, which I just finished. I called it “Overdue” because it is full of material that I have been trying to get recorded for a while.

I like many styles of music, and I’m comfortable with lots of different musical instruments. My songs aren’t about any particular pressing issues; I just like the way words and meanings can be sung and played, and I guess it must be second nature to me at this point. It’s difficult to explain, but if you’re willing to give a listen I think you’ll find that my stuff sounds natural and familiar and at the same time is fresh and innovative. Let me know what you do think!
