Julia is a pianist composer from St. Petersburg, Russia.
She attended The New England Conservatory of Music where she was an enthusiastic follower of pianist Ran Blake and his "Third Stream" philosophy (now known as Contemporary Improvisation).
After intensive private studies with Mr. Blake, Julia went on studying film music composition at the Berklee College of Music.
Among her teachers there she finds jazz pianist Ray Santisi, saxophonist and jazz ensemble leader Fred Lipsius, and film composer Michael Rendish to be the most influential in her development as composer.
It is there, at Berklee she met the principal members of her new age group: Inna Kemmerzehl, the cellist from Germany (now lives in London) and the vibraphonist Chris Lavender, all-American, who was studying with Gary Burton at the time.
"The bass players kept changing--that is usually the story with bass players.
We played my originals exclusively", Julia says "everyone in the group loved my music very much.
I guess, they liked the Russian influences in it and the way I orchestrate.
Chris enjoyed his intensely written, melodic yet complicated vibes scores." Yuval Cohen on soprano saxophone and Andreas Brade on drums, joined the group during the recording of _Little Martha_ in the August of 1996 at the Newbury Sound Studio in Boston.
"Before adding the drums, my music sounded somewhat like a classical chamber quartet with a very light jazz touch.
Andreas and Scott Barnum with his juicy bass sound and a great jazz discipline, just turned things around," the composer continues,"they gave a jazz groove to my à la Prokofiev and à la Kurt Weill music".
When the recording project was finished, Ms. Goryuchkina spent a year in Argentina, where she lectured and taught courses in composition, film, and film music.
She found Buenos Aires to be fascinating, inspirational, full of culture and life.
Among her pieces inspired by being in this great "cultural capital of South America" are _Concerto for Clarinet and Chamber Orchestra_, a cycle of jazz fusion pieces _Estos Animales Muerden_ ,and _TheaterWorks_ ,which are coming soon on CD.
While spending most of her time composing, she was also teaching at Escuela de Música de Buenos Aires and Centro Cultural San Martin.
"Buenos Aires was literally growing on me", she says, " I found it tremendously inspirational with so much to do and see in terms of film, theater, music scene.
I improved my Spanish while writing lectures and talking to Argentines in the various cafes...cafe life is such a big part of me, for I spent my adolescence in St.
Petersburg, the city so unforgettable and certainly the most special to me."In Argentina Julia was a guest at several radio programs and TV Show _Todas Las Músicas-La Música_, the latter with the forum on music in the films of Alfred Hitchcock.
Dedicated to scholarly studies of cinema music Julia continues to lecture and teach courses on the subject.
Her course_The Art of Film Music_ inspired many Tufts students to love film music, understand its origins and the power of its language.
Ms. Goryuchkina also lectures frequently on foreign cinema and its music at Berklee College of Music.
