Details:
Space is what I need to be creative -- that good quality alone time that frees your brain and lets you breath more deeply. Space is that down time, the quiet time when nothing needs to be said because the space speaks it so perfectly. It’s about timing too, and out of all of that comes this stuff.

I don’t know that I ever really have a goal to write this or that kind of tune, it’s more that I don’t have a choice because when I sit down, things just seem to come. So I sit with it, work it, give it space, revisit it, sometimes hope I haven’t forgotten it, and work it over & over. It’s a different form of problem solving, like sudoku. I’m working & re-working it constantly, figuring out how to connect all the parts together, finding the right intro, the right bridge, and, naturally, the right space for it to breathe.

About the tracks...

1. For SSR: I wrote this for my Uncle Stokes after he passed away from lymphoma. There’s an inherent bitter-sweetness to this song, the way it climbs the register and back down again, then back up, and finally resolves…almost.

2. Shopping List: There’s something trace-like with that constant note in the base that I find soothing. It’s almost as if the melody moves around it, changing it even though it stays the same. What it has to do with shopping lists, I haven’t a clue.

3. Him: This was actually inspired by a hymn, but “hymn” doesn’t have half the intrigue as “Him” does. The percussion totally transforms this into one groovin’ little tune, thanks to Tim Curle, percussionist for Josh Groban.

4. 1-3-5 is my finger position on the first chord. It’s been called 1-3-5 for a long time, [I wrote this when I was 15 or 16.] It wasn’t finished until I was 40-whatever, but I was afraid if I renamed it, I wouldn’t remember what song it was.

5. Thanks, Jackson Browne: Perhaps a more apt title is Jackson Browne-meets-the-theme-from-Peanuts, but I didn’t want to insult the guy.

6. Look Away: This is a very tender and emotional piece, and when I play the last note, I just have to look away.

7. Etagenbett is a very textured piece that makes me smile. Its strong & delicate parts make it fun to play. OK, maybe it is a little angry. But the title is really a nod to brothers Mark & Keith -- they had bunk beds when we lived in Germany, and we''d use the slats from the upper bunk to hold our books for us so we could read in bed.

8. Space: it just sounds like space [think Apollo] to me -- big, open & inviting.

9. Beyond Sturtevant Falls: A pretty simple little tune, named after one of my most favorite hiking spots.

10. He Recycled: The full title is "I Liked Him Because He Recycled", but the song is more about that point in time than about the guy.

11. So Not Me: The single word that captures this tune is "hopeful", and that, unfortunately, is so not me.
