Details:
"Cool Water", recorded in 1995 at the Grailville Oratory in Loveland Ohio, where Dan and Martha Dorff were married in 1974. Dan Dorff Sr., a professional musician at the time, and Martha Dorff an architect and designer were both heirs to strong musical backgrounds. Dan’s parents were both musicians, John Dorff Sr an accomplished cellist and Mary Dorff a singer. Dan developed a strong interest in the guitar at an early age and started a band with several of his brothers while in his twenties. Martha’s mother Mary Schickel, was also a veritable encyclopedia of the religious and secular folk traditions of her native midwest and passed on this passion to her sizeable family (11 children) of which Martha is the second oldest. The Dorff children are;

Sarah - b. 1975
Dan Jr - b. 1980
Amanda - b.1983
Rebecca - b.1986.

The musical themes on Cool Water are a distillation of both the strong Catholic faith that the Dorff Family shares and a strong love for various American folk traditions. The title track “Cool Water” is a poem written by Amanda Dorff set to music by Dan Jr. and is strongly reminiscent in form of the responsorial psalm settings used in the Catholic liturgy. “I Am the Resurrection”, written by Sarah Dorff is the product of Sarah’s long and passionate interest in polyphonic vocal traditions of the Renaissance and Early Baroque. Among the other acapella selections are settings of the Bach Chorale “O Jesu So Sweet,” Palestrina’s “the Morning Star and a Setting of Psalm 23 by Philip Amalong, a longtime friend of the Dorff Family. Mr. Amalong’s contributions to the record also include “Family Alleluia” and “Prayer of the Poet”, a setting of a poem by Franciscan poet and author Murray Bodo , as well as Mr. Amalong''s lyrical and sensitive piano playing.
On the other end of the Dorff Family’s impressively wide musical spectrum, Cool Water also features delightful renditions folk favorites such as “O Susanna”, and “All ''la Glory”, by Robbie Robertson of "The Band", played just as you would have heard them on a Sunday night in the Dorff’s backyard.
The album closes with “Moses Blessing”; a biblical prayer set to music by Dan Sr.’s brother Joe Dorff, a not so final goodbye sung with soul and clarity by Dan Dorff Sr.
