New York based trombonist/composer Marshall Gilkes was born September 30,1978 in Camp Springs, Maryland. Marshall''s father was a musician in the Air Force, which meant growing up in different parts of the country including New Hampshire, New Jersey, Alabama, Illinois, and Colorado. In 1995, Marshall left his Colorado high school to finish his senior year at Interlochen Arts Academy where he studied trombone with Jeannie Little, and jazz with Bill Sears. Upon graduation from Interlochen Arts Academy, Marshall returned to Colorado to attend the University of Northern Colorado where he studied with Buddy Baker. After a year at the University of Northern Colorado, Marshall moved to the New York area, where he attended William Paterson University. While at William Paterson, Marshall had the privilege of studying with Conrad Herwig , Ed Neumeister, and Rufus Reid. After leaving William Paterson in 1998, Marshall moved to Brooklyn, New York. Upon moving to New York, Marshall became very busy as a freelance trombonist, playing a variety of styles including Jazz, Latin, and Broadway. In the Jazz scene, Marshall''s played with the Duke Ellington Orchestra , Stanley Turrentine, Benny Golson, Oliver Lake, and David Berger . In the Latin community, he''s played with Machito , Chico O''Farrell, Tito Puente Jr. , Big 3 Palladium Orchestra, Raulin Rosendo, Ray Sepulveda , Eddie Santiago, Jose Alberto, and Iroko La Banda. During the fall of 2001-fall of 2002 Marshall played for the National and Japanese tours of the Broadway show "Swing." In 2003 Marshall was a finalist in the prestigous Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition .His album credits include the Big 3 Palladium Orchestra "Live at the Blue Note" ,David Berger and the Sultans of Swing "Marlowe" , and "Edendery" from the Marshall Gilkes Quartet. Marshall has toured extensively throughout Europe, Japan, and the Caribbean, and has performed at the Blue Note, Birdland, Lincoln Center, Tokyo''s Orchard Hall, and the Moscow Conservatory.
