"AUBREY GHENT": The Lap Steel Guitar Master

Aubrey Valdis Ghent is a native of Fort Pierce, FL, now living in Nashville, TN. His interest in the steel guitar began at the age of six and he began playing publicly at age nine. He is a third generation steel player who has been playing for thirty-six years. His father, the late Henry Nelson, played the steel guitar for more than fifty years and was Aubrey''s greatest influence and inspiration Ghent''s uncle, Willie Eason, who was Nelson''s inspiration and instructor is recognized as being the first steel guitarist within House of God churches, where Aubrey, among other steel players, continue this legacy. Even though the steel guitar is usually associated with country-western and Hawaiian music, Aubrey has taken the steel to a whole new level with his unique gospel style and highly skillful techniques. He a virtuoso steel guitarist that is known for his ability to quickly bring any audience to spiritual ecstasy! When playing hymns he makes his guitar moan soulfully, and causes it to soar with voice-like tones and melodies on upbeat, high energy selections.

It was in the fall of 1992 that Aubrey was playing tunes in a music store in Miami, FL, when an employee told him that he knew of someone who would love to hear him. That someone was Robert Stone with the Florida Folklife Department. Stone contacted Ghent and went to his home to hear him play. He was floored and somewhat speechless to witness this black man play a steel guitar with such skill and expertise. During that visit, Stone also learned that Ghent was a singer and minister as well. Aubrey had been playing at churches and concerts all over Florida and throughout the United States, but through Bob Stone he began performing at state, national, and international festivals of all types. In 1994 Ghent performed at the Smithsonian Folk Masters Concert at the Barns of Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA, where his music was recorded and placed in the Institute''s archives. Later that year he was named Master Artist of the state of Florida. He gained national attention by being on National Public Radio on numerous occasions.

Arhoolie Records became interested in Ghent''s music in 1996 and signed him as a new artist in 1997. The group, "Aubrey Ghent & Friends" was formed and their first recording,"Can''t Nobody Do Me Like Jesus" was released that year. Ghent has several other recordings with Arhoolie. It was through Aubrey Ghent that "Sacred Steel" was birthed. He was the first gospel steel player to be interviewed and recorded and he, in turn, introduced other steel players to Bob Stone and Arhoolie Records.

Aubrey and his wife Lori are a heavenly compliment; soul mates, as they refer to each other. She is the lead vocalist, along with Aubrey, and his steel guitar is the leading instrument. When performing vocal parts together their voices blend beautifully, creating a harmony with lasting effects. On each selection, Ghent brings in a rich flavor with spontaneous steel notes and solo parts that heightens the song and the interest of it''s listeners. Put all of that together with a soulful band and you''ve got a performance that''s out of this world! Aubrey Ghent is renowned for his steel guitar music and has well earned national acclaim as a Master Lap Steel Guitarist. Once you witness his phenomenal performance, your impression of the steel guitar will never be the same! You''re guaranteed to have a hand clapping, foot stomping, soul stirring, good time!

The Aubrey Ghent Band is versitle, thus being able to perform at most all venues and events. For national and international festivals contact Jw Entertainment at (404) 667-9520 and for Gospel/Christian/Church events contact AuLo Ministries at (615) 478-5724.
