Royal Wade Kimes’ bio reads like a fairy tale of impossible to incredible. He rode the Arkansas/Oklahoma border range from the time he could set a saddle until he was in his twenties. His Dad had a ranch and ran cattle on thousands of acres of the range until it closed down leaving Royal Wade with nothing to do but work a sawmill and rodeo. Royal Wade soon became restless, the only boy in a family of five children, but out of respect for his father, he stayed longer than he wanted.
Being a Kimes, he is a true throw-back to his family tree with some of the outlaw blood running through his veins. His family ran with the likes of Bonnie and Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd and Ma Barker forming their own gang called the ‘Pampa Gang’. The restless blood took over and Royal Wade Kimes picked up his guitar and headed for Nashville. Initially his desire was to write gospel songs and somehow he landed a meeting with Ken Harding, Vice President for Word Music at that time. Remembering that meeting, Ken listened to his songs and tears streamed down his cheeks. He liked what he heard, but for some reason they didn’t ‘gee-haw’, or come together as it is known. Royal Wade laughed when asked about it, “Yeah, I was a little green I guess, I told myself, if I was going to write songs for money, it would be country.”
A meeting with the late Eddy Arnold in a hardware store in Brentwood, Tennessee opened the door for them to become friends and things began to change for Kimes. Some eight years later he finally got the break he needed. Garth Brooks’ manager, Bob Doyle, who was partially responsible for Royal Wade coming to Nashville, became instrumental in bringing Garth and Royal Wade together. Kimes has since written songs for Garth Brooks, Diamond Rio, Gene Watson and others. Royal Wade then signed with Asylum Records and successfully had a top ten dance record across the nation, a top video and toured heavily across the country. He became the hottest country act on the Wal-Mart Country Tour until things suddenly changed at the label and Kimes left to pursue his dream on his own.
Wonderment Records, which he established, was his next adventure. All the big shots on the row thought he was done. . .Do you remember the part about the ‘outlaw blood’ in him? He bucked the system and turned defeat into victory before their eyes. They call him the ‘Nashville Outlaw’ for beating the system, he calls it the ‘hand of God giving him strength and the will to take on the giants of the music industry and win . . . truly it was David taking on Goliath.
Royal Wade Kimes has won two ‘Will Rogers Awards’, has been named best album by True West Magazine, and XM called his ‘Strikin’ Matches’ the best album of the year. For 2009 Kimes is releasing two records, ‘Hat’s Off – A Tribute to Eddy Arnold’ and twenty years after he made his journey to Nashville to write gospel music, ‘White Light’, his first gospel record.
Some would say his music has aged and is now ready to pour. . .until your eyes have seen and your ears have heard, your tongue cannot proclaim the wonderful uninhibited taste of Royal Wade Kimes’ music.
