Brent Gorton is a commanding songwriter whose unassuming demeanor and off-kilter charm belie the turbo-charged performer underneath. With a deadly ear for the perfect pop hook, Mr. Gorton’s songs about owls, mannequins, and sinking ships entrench themselves instantly into the listener’s psyche.
Growing up with a stockpile of his parents'' 45s avidly played on a barely functioning turntable, Brent learned from the best American rock and roll pioneers. Little Richard, Buddy Holly, the Shangri-Las and Bobby Darin were particular favorites for their accessible melodies tinged with teenage drama. Classical music was also a large influence. The severe dynamics of Stravinsky and Bartok’s jarring instrumentation left a lasting impression that would resurface in Brent’s spare yet effective arrangements.
The album was recorded entirely at home in a studio put together from second hand components, including an open reel 8 track machine. Brent squeezed every bit of fidelity out of the equipment, creating a crisp sonic landscape free from the muddiness often associated with lo-fi home recorders. The album was further enhanced by the mastering talents of Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering, whose work with Guided by Voices, Cat Power, and Modest Mouse has made him an unsung hero in the indie rock world.
The music of Brent Gorton is one of extremes; tender and brittle one moment, loud and dense the next, but always incredibly melodic and brilliantly engaging.
