Where Did Wilson Come From?

A long overdue email . . . a phone call in response . . . a reunion of two old high school friends after nearly seven years . . .

Unbeknownst to its founders, Brake for Wilson began in late August of 2004 when Allan Care and Nancy Adams reconnected with a visit. Between catching up on each other’s paths and laughing over old jokes, the two shared a few current musical and lyrical ideas that as yet hadn’t taken shape on their own. Perhaps there was something in the water in southern Virginia that August, perhaps the moon was aligned just so, or perhaps, quite simply, together they could hear a sound in the room that they hadn’t noticed before.

Idea sparked idea, creative energy crackled, and the two embarked on a songwriting partnership that birthed dozens of songs at an overwhelming rate over a year-and-a-half period. In pairing their skills and talents, Allan and Nancy found themselves witnessing a new sound . . . yet still it seemed vaguely familiar somehow – a throw-back, perhaps. While separately both are trained vocalists, together their harmony becomes an other-worldly blend. As writers, they learned to temper one another’s foils and create sweeping melodies while fully fleshing out their ideas in lyrics. Inspiration came from a multitude of sources . . . a quote, a memory, a dream, a conversation about a book or a film. Frequent questions became, “is this relatable? What is left unsaid? Where’s the hook?” Idea after idea was abandoned - left for later, left for something better, or left for dead. For much of that time, the pair lived in different states, yet managed to collaborate long distance through marathon writing sessions, through emailing ideas and sound files, and through phone calls that sounded like this: “tell me what you think about this melody - I’m going to put the phone down now so I can play it on the guitar . . . can you hear me now?”

During this prolific writing period, Allan and Nancy both relocated back to their hometown and began to regularly perform their new songs at open mics in New York and Philly, with Allan on guitar or piano and vocals, and Nancy on harmonica or hand percussion and vocals. The need to form a band became abundantly clear. Harkening back to an old inside joke from high school, the two commenced performing under the name Brake for Wilson and began to gig with various band members at local Philly venues and clubs. When they stopped for a breather from the writing in late November 2005, they felt the time was right to release some of the songs they’d shaped in the form of the album, “On We Burn”. Song choices for the album reflect a mixture of personal favorites, songs fans responded to, and songs that simply needed to be set free.

Their musical influences (Ben Folds, The Beatles, U2, Keane, CSN, Sting, The Police, Ryan Adams, Belle and Sebastian, Joni Mitchell, Hall and Oates, Rufus Wainwright, Tori Amos, Nickel Creek, Suzanne Vega, Indigo Girls, Dar Williams, Bonnie Raitt) fuse together to help shape an eclectic and unique sound that spans genres from pop-rock to classic rock, to singer-songwriter to alt-country. Yet always at the core is the vocal blend.

Currently, Brake for Wilson gigs in the Philly area and is working on recording an acoustic EP. Allan is an actor, musician, and clinical document specialist in a pharmaceutical company. Nancy is an English teacher, musician, and smiling mother of a swirling toddler. Both reside in the Philly area and both are desperate to live out their passion for their art. Care to patronize?
