Details:
A native of Hungary, with residences in that country and California, flutist Boglárka Kiss has been earning notice for embracing rarely-heard repertoire from around the world. Although well-versed in standard works, she particularly enjoys researching and performing flute music from central and Eastern Europe.

In the U.S., Boglárka has been a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. She has been featured on NPR, and appears frequently as a chamber musician and recitalist. True to her commitment to popularizing central European music in this country, she recently gave the U.S. premiere of Hungarian composer Endre Szervánszky’s flute concerto to rave reviews.

While in Europe, Boglárka strives to introduce American works not widely known there. She has been heard in Germany, Croatia, and Hungary, among others. In her native Hungary, she frequently appears in recitals and is regularly featured on Hungarian National Radio. She premiered Grammy-winner Billy Childs’ Sonata for Flute and Piano with pianist Robert Edward Thies in Europe in 2002, and Katherine Hoover’s Kokopeli in Hungary in 2003.

Her eclectic solo debut album Air features the first recording of the Sonata for Flute and Piano by Billy Childs, works by CPE Bach, Toru Takemitsu, Hungarian composers Béla Bartók, István Szelényi, and Endre Szervánszky. Boglárka can also be heard on orchestral CDs for the Naxos label, on the Los Angeles Flute Orchestra’s Stroke of Twelve album (on flute, piccolo, and alto flute), and others.

Aside from her performing career, Boglárka maintains a commitment to teaching as well. Currently, she is Professor of Flute and Lecturer of Music at Cerritos College, maintains a private studio, and is in demand as a master class teacher, lecturer, and music coach.

In 2003, Boglárka gave a recital/demonstration “Inspiration in 20th Century Hungarian Flute Music—A Performer’s Guide” at the annual convention of the National Flute Association. Her presentation focused on aesthetic and performance considerations when interpreting chamber and orchestral music from Hungary.

Boglárka was born and raised in Hungary where she studied music for 9 years. At age 18, she came to the U.S. where she earned degrees in economics and flute performance. In 2000, she was a Yamaha prize winner at the Julius Baker International Flute Seminar. Her teachers have included James Newton, Julius Baker, Anne Diener Zentner, and Jim Walker.
