Don''t let the title fool you. This is a very good CD -well worth adding to your collection. Check out the following review by Ben Ohmart (Assistant Editor, 2002-01-02, Music Dish Industry e-Journal) There''s a joke around a certain group of music people that claims that the majority of blues tunes begins with ''woke up this morning,'' but until I laid an ear on Bobby, I''d never actually heard one. But shore nuff, as soon as Bobby begins ''Today I Sing the Blues'' it''s ''woke up this morning.'' Now my life is complete. I''ve heard quintessential BLUES.
But the man with the white hair, who spent a good 2 years getting this clean and pretty disc Just right doesn''t stick straight to blues. No, check out ''We Can''t Make It'' because it sports some really funky bass and laid back vocals from Mr. Hinton. The voice can glide between B.B. King and Ray Charles when he wants it, but msainly the influence is smooth blues, rather thn the wild slide guitar or utterly depressing side of the genre. Mr. Hinton is probably what Clapton really wants to sound like.
Of course the entire cd doesn''t go for Bobby''s voice. willie Nelson''s hit ''Crazy'' comes out soulfully for Sylvia Harris, whose voice is strong and shines like a broadway star. (In fact the arrangement is such that you''d think this was a bonus track from a current The Wiz revamp.)
Except for the synth, ''Members Only'' containes some of the best and most heartfelt stuff, as well as a good pop arrangement of a cool, easy piece of semi-blues that could become a potent song for others.
For full service, with nary complaint, turn quickly to the start of the cd, where ''Are You Happy?'' pumps and slaps a bass, where the piano enjoys a fleeting run, where the background female singers ask you the tricky question ''are you happy?'' Soul blues, and very spirited within the semi-confines of a medium tempo. By the time the sax comes in, you Are happy.
Singing the Blues is probably a bad name for this multiplex cd, but the blues are influenced with precision, along with several other offshoot avenues.
