BartJones debut ep conveys a slow drama and conceptual sweep reminiscent of such artists as Bright Eyes, Beck, Wilco and other rootsy, artsy bands.
“California Dream” opens the EP with a simple strum on the acoustic guitar and as Bart sings “dream a little longer” the song bursts out of its daydream into the bright light of the ever present Southern California sunshine and fully electrified rock and roll. This song sets the tone for the collection which is both cinematic and raunchy, evoking the likes Neal Young in the country inspired “Quiet Room” and Radiohead’s Bends-era songwriting albeit with sunglasses instead of an umbrella on "Donna." You can hear a bit of Stones on "Beautiful View." These songs get into your head and under your skin. Like Los Angeles, it only appears sunny, but listen closely and you’ll hear longing in the songs. Perhaps showing his cards, BJ ends the ep with Neil Diamond’s classic, “Solitary Man” although this version is laid bare with just the vocal and acoustic guitar.
