"The opening song of this SF band''s first cd finds them crunching out a rough''n''tumble garage pop with lots of snare drum that sounds a lot like Violent Femmes... but if Gordon Gano were replaced by more of a boyish crooner. The next track "Pipe Down!" does just that (bring things down a bit, that is!) as does the third song. These lower-key tunes which make up the better part of the album (and which gives you opportunity to catch hold of the lyrics), call to mind quirky storytellers such as Jonathan Richman, Microphones'' Phil Elverum or Morrissey even. A promising indie pop debut!"

"Picking Up Your Pieces is theatric, energetic, at times campy (it begins with Nichols screaming 1,2,3,4 in German and has songs about giant squids and pirate ships), but always engaging. Nichols'' voice is an elastic thing, fascinating in its imperfections. The guitar solos can be messy and erratic but, again, mesmerizing in their frenetic qualities. The songs themselves move from quiet folk rock ballads to operatic anthems. In short, Nichols is all over the place, and we''re lucky to go along with him on his little musical sojourns."

Picking Up Your Pieces was recorded on one sunny June day above our friend Jeff''s woodshop in San Luis Obispo, California. The members of the band were all about to embark on seperate journeys for the year, and we were frantically trying to get as much done as possible. So we recorded the thing totaly live, with minimal seperation (Jameson''s amp was the only thing not in the room). We did about three takes of each of the eight songs on the album, and called it a day.
Then we mixed the sucker for a few months, Jameson added guitar parts from his new home in Boston, and by the end of November it felt as good as done.
We are happy with this recording in many ways, and think you will be too.
