Details:
Sweet Lady H is The Black Brians’ second album of lo-fi indie rock. The style is very similar to their debut, ART, but it’s more focused: ART was a mishmash of styles and jokes; Sweet Lady H is a more serious exploration of sin and redemption.
That said, Sweet Lady H isn’t a lame attempt at making art more “serious” by slowing it down and adding strings. The songs on Sweet Lady H cover a range of subjects including Satanic possession, late-term abortion, apocalypse, nihilism, cannibalism, barbershop, prison, the occult, death, and oral sex. Rockers like Sgt. Bones and The Ghost Hole are as hard as anything from the first album, and the band explores new territory on more plaintive, mellow numbers like Stars and Charles Dixon. Velocity is a guitar showcase over a bluesy prison-break lyric; while The Locksmith’s Daughter is audio noir; a 6-minute spoken word that is the albums centerpiece.
