Details:
Announcing a new artist and songwriter from the Northeast Arkansas area, Mr. Bill Workman. Bill is from Jonesboro, AR and has been writing since about 1970. He has been performing around the Northeast Arkansas area for about 35 years. He has performed at local fairs and celebrations, as well as, on the stages of various jamborees including the Memphis based Mid-South Jamboree in the mid 60’s. He was one of the headliners on the stage of the Arkansas Opry, which was based in Jonesboro, AR for a couple of years in 1983-84. He has also played with several local bands.
Since he began writing, he has accumulated a large collection of his own original works. In 1981, he ventured out on his own and cut a 45 record at Soundplex Studios in Jonesboro. In 1999 he decided to do an independent album. The album is called As the Eagle Flies. It contains a wide variety of songs including Country, Ballads, and Rock-a -Billy. The album was recorded and produced at Raney Recording Studio in Drasco, AR. All the songs on the CD are the original and copyrighted works of Bill Workman. His wife, Francie, created the CD title, cover design concept, and wrote the lyrics to the title song, As the Eagle Flies. Workman says, “Everyone encouraged me to do it and I wanted to see if I could. It was a work of love because it sure hasn’t made me rich.”
Workman has been referred to as being Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins all rolled into one. He has a voice and style that is similar to all three. They are the main ones, along with a few others, who have influenced his music. Bill has also been given the name “Mr. Rockabilly” by many of his fans.
When asked by a local fan why he didn’t try to go to Nashville with his music, he replied, “Well, if I had been writing this kind of music back when Cash, Perkins, Presley, and others were really big in the business during the late 50’s and on into the 60’s, then I think my music would have done well. It doesn’t seem to be what the majority of the younger generation wants now, but I will still write, play, and sing it because I like it and that’s enough. However, I wouldn’t turn down an offer if someone wanted to pick up one or more of my songs and make hits out of them.”
Workman was raised around the Clover Bend and Hoxie, Arkansas areas. Workman’s family is all very musically talented. His cousins, the Hilburn sisters were back up singers for many famous recording artists. His cousin, Bernice Hilburn Turner and the late Doyle Turner played for Hank Williams, SR. for many years. Robby Turner, son of Bernice and Doyle, is a renown steel guitarist and played for the Highwaymen (the late Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and the late Waylon Jennings) and many others. Bill, his sibling brothers, and uncle all play music and do not let any family get-togethers go by without a jam session. Workman definitely has a background that adds to the validity of being a very talented writer and performer.
On a personal note, Bill has been married to wife Francie for 34 years. They have 2 children and 2 grandsons. His hobbies, besides music, are antiques, Civil War history, coin collecting, and is a licensed auctioneer for the state of Arkansas. He has a strong faith in God and is a part time song leader and faithful member of Greensboro Road church of Christ in Jonesboro, AR.
He doesn’t do any touring across the country but plays locally from time to time in Jonesboro and around northeast Arkansas. You may e-mail him at francieew@https://www.tradebit.com with any comments about his CD As the Eagle Flies.
