Details:
The Big-Eyed Bees are a multi-generational, extended family of musicians based in West Grove, PA. Propelled by the songwriting of Charlie Breuninger and the engineering and production chops of Earl Matthews, this musical collective draws on the energy and enthusiasm of the latest generation of musicians as well as the experience and perspective of grizzled veterans of the regional music scene.

The Big-Eyed Bees cover a broad swath of musical real estate. Buzz, their debut album released in December 2005, features rockabilly, country, bluegrass, and straight-up rock tunes. You can hear hints of the Dead, the Stones, Tom Petty, John Prine, and John Hiatt without straining much.

Ben Breuninger (aka Oblique Ben) plays electric and acoustic guitar and sings backing vocals on Buzz. Ben is in the 8th grade at Fred S. Engle Middle School and stars as Jud (the bad guy!) in the school’s 2006 production of Oklahoma!. An accomplished artist, Ben designed the cover art for Buzz as well as the Big-Eyed Bees’ web site.

Carl Breuninger plays bass and keyboards and contributes backing vocals on Buzz. A freshman at Avon Grove High School, Carl plays oboe and English horn in the Chester County Youth Orchestra, oboe and clarinet in the AGHS Concert and Marching Bands, and bass in the AGHS Stage Band.

Charlie Breuninger plays guitar and bass and does the lead vocals on Buzz. Over the past four decades, he has played tenor and alto sax, oboe, English horn, and bass in regional bands working in a variety of styles, including jazz fusion, psychedelic, country, old-style R&B, and roots rock.

Rob Chirnside (aka Box Turtle Bob) plays drums on Buzz. He also does the drumming for the Witch Doctors, the official blues band of the Big-Eyed Bees. For over forty years, Rob has played regionally with dozens of bands in genres ranging from metal to country.

Earl Matthews plays guitar, bass, and keyboards and sings backing vocals on Buzz. Earl teaches guitar and bass and runs a busy recording studio. With over forty years of musical experience, he has toured nationally with rock and country acts and has performed on, engineered, and produced numerous records and CDs. His latest CD, Joy Rides, is an eclectic collaboration with guitarist Jim Rowland and was released in 2005.

Dan Orlando plays keyboards on Buzz. Dan is a junior at Avon Grove High School and is the perennial male lead in whatever musical they’re doing there. He plays keyboards and sings lead vocals with local act John Paul and the Clergy and composed all the songs on their debut album, Scalene Row, released in May 2005. Dan also plays piano in the AGHS Jazz Band.

Dave Renz plays tenor sax on Buzz. Dave is an accomplished jazz musician who gigs and records regionally with a variety of jazz artists. Dave also works with the jazz and stage bands at Fred S. Engle Middle School and Avon Grove High School.

Dave Donohue plays 12-string acoustic guitar and sings backing vocals on Buzz. A Beatles nut, Dave is a veteran of the local and regional music scene.

Mike Wiwel plays drums on Buzz. Mike is another member of the Big-Eyed Bees'' Geezer Brigade and stays busy gigging with area bar bands.
