Details:
The Beat Club and Electrobeat Records

Inspired by the rhythmic insanity of the Miami Bass movement, the techno-savvies of Kraftwerk and the pop sensibilities of New Order, The Beat Club, originally a one-off studio project, has now endured for almost two decades.

The Beat Club (Ony Rodriguez along with his wife, Mirey Valls) formed Electrobeat Records in 1992 as a statement of independence. Working within the framework of a major label drained the creative energies of the project, in direct conflict with Ony’s basic philosophy that “creating music should be fun”. Hence, on the recommendation of The Beat Club’s UK label head and then manager Rob Gretton, Atlantic Record’s US contract was left to expire. Rob was a great influence on prioritizing the artist’s needs over that of commerce. His success with Manchester’s Factory Records and as New Order’s manager vindicated his philosophy.

A series of singles such as “Security”, “Dreams Were Made To Be Broken” and ”Transamerica” landed The Beat Club on electronic music’s most influential lists from publications including The Wire and MixMag. In addition, almost a dozen albums have been released under the guises of Fuzzy Logic, Toys For The Revolution, Santa Fe and Urban Select. Since going it alone and forming Electrobeat, The Beat Club has never looked back.

Robotica

There was no intent for the old “concept album” cliché, yet, I did see a general theme developing during the production of these tracks. The story of the dehumanizing “herd” mentality is even more relevant in today’s society. This is a universal theme that goes beyond politics into social trends and fashion -and two singles from the album, which have been already released, “Dream Within A Dream” and “Lost In Space” definitely articulate this concept.

I had a vision of a controlling entity keeping its constituency in line. Mobilizing and energizing it at will, while keeping the members off guard, not ever fully understanding the consequence of their actions. I wanted to create a world of machine-generated rhythms and sequences to move the listener, not unlike the mood created in the most energetic of dance-oriented clubs. I looked to my original inspiration for The Beat Club, the 808/909 drums and percussion, the sweeping filters and analog minimal bass lines. These are the classic sounds that form the foundation for the energy required by my world of automatons in Robotica. – Ony

Technically, Robotica is only the second original artist full-length release for The Beat Club. The first album, Paris, contains the singles “Security”, “Dreams Were Made To Be Broken”, “X”, and “Transamerica”, among others. Original tracks were also featured on the label’s compilations, Electrobeat…introduction and Electrobeat…Musica Futurista. These are available in CD or download versions directly from the Electrobeat web site.

Also available at the Electrobeat web site are other recordings by The Beat Club released under the project names of Fuzzy Logic, Toys For The Revolution, Santa Fe and Urban Select. All tracks can be listened to in their entirety as mono MP3s. All releases are available for purchase as CDs or for download as high quality MP3s.
