Review:
In the middle 60´s there was a band in Lima, Perú that was ahead of it’s time, that band sung in English language, only original songs, and their influences was the British Invasion, that band called The New Juggler Sound, founded by Cornejo brothers with some other friends. At the middle of 1967, change their sound style, now influenced by the Sgt. Pepper of the Beatles and early psychedelic music. On of there musicians go and two other friends came in, making a sextet. This new band was called Laghonia, they recorded a couple of LP´s, the first is a compilation of NJS singles and the second a new concept album called ¨Etcetera¨. This album ¨Unglue¨ is a compilation of the rehearsals from this band, includes a couple of unreleased songs, and different versions from their original songs. 54 minutes of unreleased music When this band broke up, they became in We all Together... but Laghonia is quite more psychedelic and weird! This is the first release of the Peruvian label Repsychled Records.

Biography:
The Cornejo brothers had been experimenting with music since they were kids. Their favorite composers were Tchaikovsky, Ravel, Gershwin, Ray Charles, Bobby Darin and Leiber and Stroller. In 1962 they used to listen to Stevie Wonder with his fabulous “Fingertips” and also The Four Seasons. When The Beatles appeared they decided to form a band. They needed one more member and found Alberto Miller, who had a similar musical taste. Finally Alex Abad joined playing percussion instruments. The New Juggler Sound was the name they picked, based on the British invasion.

At that time their main influences were The Beatles, Zombies, Searchers, Animals, Kinks and Yardbirds. They wrote more than 100 songs in three years. During that time the band appeared in TV shows, concerts in schools, theatres, happenings and art galleries. Their music was so avant garde compared to that of other Peruvian bands that no label wanted to take the risk to release an album of their material.

In 1968 they recorded a 45rpm record for RCA Victor: "Baby Baby" and "I Must Go". The same year, they recorded two songs in Spanish, "Sonrisa de Cristal" and "Mil Millas de Amor". At the end of 1968 Alberto Miller left the band. The music world was going through a change and so did The New Juggler Sound. Their change was a radical one. Their musical horizons were broadening and now they were looking for a guitar player that could be a part of the band''s new ideas. David Levene moved to Lima at the very young age of 16 years. David made a hitch hiking trip with his backpack and his acoustic guitar to northern Peru with the intention of discovering landscapes outside of Lima. While sitting on a bench in this little town playing his guitar, a guy was passing by, stopped, fascinated by David''s playing. After a few minutes, he went over and asked him if he had a band. David replied, "No!" It turned out that this interested guy was Eddie Zarauz, the bass player from New Juggler Sound. David was invited for an audition. He was a proto-typical lead guitar player—a combination of blues and psychedelia, just what the Cornejo brothers wanted to give the band new dynamics... something like The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Vanilla Fudge, Spirit, Blues Image—which by the way, were bands that the American born Levene liked very much. The result was EXPLOSIVE!

Immediately they recorded "Glue", a song that Saul wrote when he read an article in Time Magazine about the latest drug craze in the US of inhaling glue. The lyrics talk about peer pressure. The B side was a song called "Billy Morsa", a Latin shuffle with Lennon style chords. The words talk about a fictional character who was murdered in jail.

The band needed someone to play the keyboards. They called this guy they knew who played Jazz and Brazilian music named Carlos Salom and asked him if he would be interested in playing with them. The song "Bahia" was the first song they recorded with Carlos. The idea for the song came when Saul was looking at an almanac with Brazilian girls in different Brazilian cities and one of the cities was Bahia. Manuel added the Latin rhythm section and David played the guitar solo a la Santana. This was their first hit! The B side was a song written by David, Saul and Manuel. At that time David had been listening to the Beatles White Album and was very much impressed by the solo in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." You can hear that influence in "The Sandman.

They recorded three singles under the name The New Juggler Sound. The band get some good reviews on local news papers as they still played on art galleries and international happenings, something that no other Peruvian band used to do. So, it was time to create an album. They recorded two more songs as a sextet; they added these to the three singles, and the album ¨Glue¨ was finished. For this first album they changed their name to Laghonia (the Agony).

Now as a sextet, Laghonia was a huge band on stage, one of the very few in South America together with Os Mutantes and Modulo 1000 who played with Hammond Organ on stage and in their recordings. At the same time Glue LP appear on the market, they started to record new songs for the second (and last) album ¨Etcetera¨. On this second album there appeared on a few songs as singer Carlos Guerrero, son of the MAG label owner, and Ernesto Samamé on bass. At the beginning of 1971 Laghonia broke up, and some time later Saúl & Manuel Cornejo, Carlos Salóm, Carlos Guerrero and Ernesto Samamé made a new band, which they called We All Together.

Laghonia’s ¨Unglue¨ is a compilation of rare and unreleased material that has never before been shared with an audience. This collection includes unreleased tracks, recordings of acoustic rehearsals and instrumental versions. From ¨Unglue¨, it is possible to perceive the metamorphosis that led to the album ¨Glue¨ be released in 1970. It´s 54 minutes of pure alternative versions and the unreleased songs ¨Chocolate houses¨ and ¨Confusion in the street¨. This is the first release of the Peruvian label Repsychled Records.
