Luis Young Agüero was born on February 18, 1930, in Lima, Peru, and first performed in his father''s band, known as Young Macedo y su Orquesta. His father, Luis Young Macedo, was a classical musician, "and because of the name of the group, Luis Young Aguero was always addressed as if Macedo was his last name," and therefore, Lucho Macedo became his stage name. Lucho''s childhood idol was Richie Ray (for his classical approach to the piano), in addition to the Cuban influences of Lecuona''s Cuban Boys, Armando Orefiche, Sonora Matancera, and Pérez Prado (his first interest in the big hand and mambos) and the music from Puerto Rico.

Feeling it was time for him to put a band together, Lucho was inspired by the sound of Sonora Matancera (which was enormously popular at the time) and formed his own Sonora-style group (Lucho Maceda y su Sonora) on November 2, 1955. A month later, his Sonora backed Celia Cruz during her first visit to Perú, initiating what would become a lifetime friendship with the late Cuban diva. In addition to accompanying Celia at one radio station, he backed Bienvenido Granda at another station. Listening to Lucho Macedo v su Sonora was like listening to Sonora Matancera. As a result, they became the right band to back all of the vocalists from Sonora Matancera who traveled to Perú.
