Come on Down to Tin Can Holler
Local Musicians, The Chicken Tractor Deluxe Release Their First CD

by Gina Giacomantonio

It was a foray across three valleys for the wild-dancing and zydeco energy of the Ithaca-based MacGillicuddies that recently brought me out to Millheim’s unique brewpub and restaurant, the Elk Creek Café + Aleworks.

But what remains is the funky Americana of The Chicken Tractor Deluxe’s new CD Tin Can Holler that I picked up at the show (Chicken Tractor’s Kai Schafft and Emelie Peine are long-standing members of The MacGillicuddies).

The Chicken Tractor is a collective of musicians including Kai Schafft, Nell Hanssen, Jim Baughman, Allan Bowers, Dave Mudgett, Gary Gyekis, and Emelie Peine. The band is deeply and unapologetically rooted deep in the strata of American country and rural music, drawing equally from string bands recorded on shellac 78 rpm records back in the 1920s and 1930s and classic country and honky-tonk from the 1940s and 1950s.

This close-knit group of Penns Valley friends and musicians has dusted off some wonderful old tunes plus a few originals for an album that is equal parts lush pedal steel, and banjo-driven Appalachian stomps, with an instrumentation that includes guitars (both 6-string and tenor), upright bass, rubboard, drums, trombone, trumpet, and banjo-ukulele.

In other words, this is pure, rough, unfiltered American country music; raw, and beautiful, and frankly, completely unlike anything you are bound to hear on commercial country stations.

“A lot of our inspiration and material comes from old 78 rpm records and field recordings, as well as old country albums picked up at yard sales and flea markets,” says Kai Schafft.

“For the most part, this music has been largely forgotten, but these old songs are powerful. It’s a kick to bring them back to the light of day, and especially with this talented group of people.”

Tin Can Holler has gotten regular exposure on WPSU’s Folk Show, and the band plays frequently with shows coming up in Millheim, Lewisburg, Selinsgrove, and later this summer at the Northumberland County Fair. Their CD is available at City Lights Music in State College and comes highly recommended.
