Details:
Two Years since the debut CD ‘Times of Drought’ Coyote returns with their bold, sophomore effort ‘When It All Comes Down’ and the differences are apparent from track one. Principle songwriters Marc Gartman (Two Many Banjos) and Jerree Small (Southwire) contribute seven songs each but this time they are joined by their new band; Matt Mobley (Two Many Banjos) on upright bass, Bryan ‘Lefty’ Johnson (Black Eyed Snakes) on percussion and Derek Rolondo (The Tisdales) on drums. The music was recorded live to tape at Sparta Sound in early November 2009 with Rich Mattson (Ol’ Yeller, The Tisdales) Producing the set.

Simply put, the music this time around is much more eclectic. With influences ranging from Califone, Gillian Welch and Will Oldham, Coyote wanted to expand their pallet and make a more diverse sounding record. Strains of Middle Eastern harmony float around opening cut ‘Under The Rolling River, ‘One Time’ travels back to early 20th Century backwoods Americana and there’s even some Wilco-esque Piano pop on ‘When The Night Was Still Young’. A more varied record indeed.

The power of the new rhythm section on these cuts cannot be understated. With style, grace and patience Matt, Lefty and Derek opened their ears wide to contribute only what was necessary to bring Marc and Jerree’s songs to life. Some material had been ‘road tested’ for a few months, others were brought to the table during the session itself (most tunes were recorded in one take). The final cut ‘The Trees’, a hauntingly beautiful jazz ballad from Jerree, was the last song recorded at the session and is a perfect end to the CD. It might take Coyote another couple of years to record again but until then the listener has much to chew on with this disc.
