Details:
The tunes on this CD were wriiten over a period of many years and for many reasons. "Camel Humps" and "Night Mood"
are from the early-mid eighties when I played with the Steve Giordano Quintet and were written for this particular group of
musicians. For this recording, I was fortunate enough to get the original members of the Quintet together again to reproduce the arrangements that we played twenty-plus years ago. It is a testament to the musicianship of Steve, Bob Meashey, Marc
Adler and Joe Mullen that these tracks came off sounding as if we had never stopped playing together and that the cuts used were both first takes.
"Hectic Street" was inspired by the two lane residential road on which I live that annoyingly becomes a superhighway at rush hour. Wife Terry, John Swana, Joe and I dart in and out of traffic. Hopefully, no one got hurt.
The oldest composition in this collection, "Trooper Duke" was written as a sort of lament for the type of Western hero the likes of John Wayne portrayed on the big screen. It could very easily have been called "Theme for an Imaginary Western" had the title not already been used. A tip of the hat to Joe, George Rabbai and Matt Davis for so ably bringing this one to life.
The newest tune, "Stumblefunk" began as a riff I came up with while noddling on my bass guitar. After that, it came together rather quickly. On the final realization you hear John, Joe and longtime friend and musical partner, Ron Thomas, who found the funky ambient sounds I was looking for.
"Blue Mountain bossa Nova" and "Room Without A Window" were both written in my windowless teaching studio at a local college. The bossa has a somewhat unusual chord progression utilizing a B major that moves to its opposite, F major,
under the first of the melody. George, Terry and Joe help me on this one. I have Terry to thank for transforming "Room Without A Window". Originally, it was a moody dirge but it was her idea to move it to a bright 3/4 tempo which, I think, works nicely.
"Pastorale" was written quickly in one sitting. Funny how that happens sometimes. I think it reflects the peaceful mood I was in at the time, and Ron and I wend our way way through its folksy changes in our comfortable style.
