About the Music for Yoga series:
The music structure of the “Music for Yoga” series is carefully designed around traditional Indian Ayurvedic healing principles that use specific musical keys, notes, sounds, rhythms and frequencies, as well as chanted mantras, to assist with Pranayama (Breathing), Asana (Posture) and Samatha/Bhavana (Meditation/Concentration) techniques, and can also be used to help bring about chakra balancing.

Each volume contains tracks that can be used for:
Yoga Prep. & Warm Up (preparation and relaxation — turning the attention inward + warm up stretching yoga)
Asana Practice (yoga posture)
Pranayama Practice (yoga breathing — including inhalation, retention and exhalation)
Samatha/Bhavana Meditation Practice (relax, meditate, find tranquillity)

Track information for Music for Yoga: Volume 1

Clouds of Air (100bpm) 10:00
This preparation for yoga track is smooth and tranquil, with a light Tabla beat. It is designed to be welcoming as we prepare ourselves for a yoga session. It does not impose too much on us, it gently lulls us into the right frame of mind and breathing pattern as we prepare and stretch ourselves.

Rubbed Tibetan singing bowls provide a calming background in an Indian swara tonal centre that grounds us in our Sahastrara (Crown) Chakra region. Synthesized ‘air’ sounds soothe, and a gentle melody guides us into our preparatory breathing and stretching. A luggis Tabla beat keeps a steady rhythm, assisting concentration and focus.

Gam Thaan (110bpm) 5:00
This Asian-inspired track is designed to be a bit more vigorous than the previous one — at 110bpm it gently pumps the heart and helps us to get into the flow during our warm up period, while still retaining some quiet and contemplative qualities. This piece eases us out of the transcendent bliss of Clouds of Air, and brings us gently into a slightly pumped and rhythmic atmosphere — readying us for the more expressive Asanas. It works particularly well with the Flow Yoga style.

Monkey skull percussive musical notation provides the rhythmic and melodic base, with overtones of a simple Vibraphone cycle. Prayer bells and temple gongs complete the Thai/Asian feel of this gently upbeat track.

Let it Flow (90bpm) 10:00
This is the first of the tracks designed for Asanas. At 90bpm it’s not too fast (slower than the warm up tracks) but has a nice beat to it to help us develop and hold our postures with strength and commitment.

An Indian Tabla-style beat drives this music, with strong and grounding bass lines, and an interesting Santur (hammered dulcimer) melody that lightly adds focus and attention at various places, keeping us directed firmly towards our Asana sequence.

Sunrise (72bpm) 10:00
Sunrise takes its inspiration from an early morning at the Ghats on the banks of the scared river Ganges, in Varanasi, India, where spiritual devotees bathe, pray and meditate. Long golden sun reflections splash across the silky-smooth river and a saffron-painted dawn sky illuminates the scene through dusty-colored smoke haze.

Calming harmonium chords underscore this Indian-inspired soundscape. Warm sitar and Flute melodies caress our heart-mind, soothing away tension and inviting us on a mystical inner journey. Seductively rhythmic Tabla percussion and talking drum provide a confident focus for our concentration. This deeply evocative track fills our senses with yogic delight and transports us to a state of Samadhi while engaging in our postures.

Reflecting Upon You (80bpm) 10:00
This track was inspired by travel in India, and time spent visiting the Ghats on the Ganges and doing meditative yoga in the sun. It has the exotic flavour of the market laneways, temples and holy places of Varanasi, Dharamsala, Bodh Gaya, and Delhi, and the living spirit that drives all India. The title of this track literally asks us to look deeply into ourselves and reflect on the true meaning of our existence, while focussing on our breath and our movement. It complements styles of yoga that focus on sustained stretching and breath control.

Tabla and sitar sounds fill this track with an almost ‘pungent’ atmosphere — colors of red, yellow and orange come to mind from the warm tones in this Indian-inspired piece. The vibrancy of its resonant tones and rhythms, steady and constant, give us strength and vitality. The steady Tabla beat keeps us moving smoothly forward with mindful intention.

The Sea Buoy (55bpm) 10:00
[Note: the first note (High Singing Bowl hit) comes at 36 seconds, and signals the first In-Breath]

This track is one of several specialist tracks in the Music for Yoga series, and is specifically designed for Pranayama practice. Yogic breathing revitalizes the body, calms the emotions and clears the mind. The Sea Buoy is designed at 55 beats-per-minute to assist the mind and body to slow the heart-rate and breath down to this health-enriching and restorative rhythm. Pranayama — comprising inhalation (puraka), retention (kumbhaka) and exhalation (rechak) — can be done easily while listening to this track. Bell-like sounds of Tibetan Singing Bowls mark the beginning of each in-breath and out-breath. The wave sounds help guide you how long to breathe, and the bowls act like a metronome helping to keep the rhythm. The whole effect of the sea sounds in synchronization with the gentle bowl sounds is very relaxing and helps bring you to a calm deep breathing rhythm.

The track creates an ujjayi pranyama “ocean’s breath” cycle, which has a ratio of 1:1:1:1
Inhalation 4 Beats + Retention 4 Beats + Exhalation 4 Beats + Retention 4 Beats

Tibetan Singing bowls and crystal bowls provide a drone bed that underscores the track. These drones have been carefully created in the musical keys and frequencies of the swara (tone in the Indian musical scale) that, according to ancient Ayurvedic healing philosophy, resonates with the Muladhara, or root chakra. This tone believed to be health-giving and revitalizing to the whole neuromuscular system, especially the lower abdominal organs. The resonating bass drone gives solid grounding at the base of the spine while bowl strikes in two frequencies create a strong platform upon which the vertebra, the rib cage, neck and head can be securely supported. When seated in the upright posture, supported by this strong vertical system, it is possible to breathe correctly — filling and deflating the lungs fully with the help of the abdominal diaphragm.

The sea sounds assist with timing the inhalation and exhalation of the breath. A high-toned bell sound gives notice to start breathing in, and a lower toned bell indicates when it is time to breathe out. Bring your attention to your breath. Synchronize it with the sound of the sea waves, as they roll past and break. Left and right, they swish past and break in a constant and even rhythm. Follow that with your mind. You may wish to visualize a sea buoy in the ocean water just off the beach. It rides the currents and fresh ocean breezes, rocking gently back and forth like a pendulum. Each time it rocks one way, at the full extent of the movement, the bell sounds at the higher pitch, and then as it rocks back in the other direction the bell sounds at the lower pitch. As you listen to the soundscape, imagine that you are the buoy. As you rock in one way the bell sounds, and then as you rock the other way it sounds again — back and forth.

Finding Luminosity (60bpm) 10:00
Finding Luminosity is the search for clarity, insight and a higher state of consciousness in meditation. Heavenly voices blend easily with rich layers of mesmeric, cycling synth pads giving a calm atmosphere to this meditative work, while occasional crystal bells gently arrest our wandering attention and help bring the mind back to focus on clarity — to find luminosity — in this piece designed for Bhavana.

The tranquil, soaring nature of the music soundscape lifts us and carries us high above the mountains, where we float effortlessly while directing a clear and mindful concentration deep into our being. Simply, a transcendent way to complete a yoga session!
