Regulars of the London klezmer scene will know that Klezmer Klub have been quietly making their mark for over 2 decades. Originally formed when 3 Jewish musicians - wanting to create the sound of a full klezmer band - invited some non-Jewish musician friends to join them. The Klub was born.
Klezmer Klub quickly found their musical home in the liberal Jewish community Beit Klal Yisrael. As the BKY Rabbi put it in the liner notes for our first CD ‘4 weddings and a Barmitzvah’:
"For many years the Klezmer Klub have been at the heart of our community celebrations, getting people on their feet dancing with the scrolls on Simchat Torah, or at weddings, or at community parties. They were always good, but over the years they’ve become stronger, ever more exuberant, more musically sophisticated. They are bursting at the seams with a kind of generosity of heart, with true klezmer wildness. Their music is altogether a delight to the soul (and to the feet)." With our second CD ‘Whitechapel, Mayn Vaytshepl’ we have stepped up to the base in a very different way. Meticulously researched by our singer Vivi Lachs – mainly through oral history, following a lead here, tracing a reference there, and with the help of many enthusiastic members of the London Jewish community, she has unearthed some wonderful songs about the Jewish East End of London. The set of Yiddish songs brings to life the characters, sites and sounds of the turn-of-the-century Jewish East End. They are filled with the names of places, people, activities, feelings and politics of what was once a vibrant Yiddish society. Some songs were written by famous writers; Morris Winchevsky, Itzik Manger and Chaim Tauber. Others are street songs, pure and simple. Almost all have very rarely been heard.
It has been harder to track down instrumental numbers associated with the London East End, so to remedy that our clarinetist Jon Petter wrote the ‘Doina for Clapton’ and the ‘Hackney Hora’ inspired by living the past two decades in the East London borough of Hackney. The other handful of tunes on the CD have all been chosen for having a special place in the hearts of Klezmer Klub, and, whilst respecting the tradition, the bitter-sweet sound that is klezmer, we bring them to life from our own perspective of modern day life in London, with all the inter-cultural mixing that goes with it.
‘Whitechapel, Mayn Vaytshepl’ has been warmly received by peers and afficianados. The internationally recognized Yiddish singer Adrienne Cooper said:

Social historian Derek Reid puts it another way:
“A vibrant CD full of the heart songs of historic community. Klezmer Klub have captured here the essence and the singing soul of what the poet Avraham Stencl numbered as one of our greatest townships. This is emotional touchy feely history beyond photographs.”

Writing in the Christmas Day issue of the Jewish Chronicle, playwright Diane Samuels says that our CD helps support her view “that traditional Jewish music is as relevant today as ever”, that they are “songs from the past that tell us how to live now” and that “at heart, klezmer and Yiddish song are historical records only in part and give voice to the stuff of life and how we deal with change.”
Whilst the songs are sung in Yiddish, the CD is beautifully packaged, with all the Yiddish and full translations as well as background information and context for the songs and tunes.
