It quickly becomes apparent, while listening, that Franklin is using "Useless" ironically. What Stray delivers is an incredibly passionate and sincere acoustic warmth to punk rock ethics. It''s cathartic and comforting at the same time. This ambitious agenda remains true-to-form throughout the album giving the listener a different side of Franklin each track. "Vows" and "A Mutual Respect" intimately portray Franklin''s heart-on-his-sleeve singer/songwriter side. The raucous stomp of "Excess in Moderation" to the powerful gang vocals on "God Given Right" and "Damned" transition seamlessly to intensely raw numbers like "You Spoke of the Lord," "Asleep," and "Stray" taking the listener on a roller coaster ride that twists and turns with only a few brief moments to catch your breath. On a seemingly minimal record, Franklin conveys a vision that few full bands can.
