After 14 months of sporadic work, here’s my second solo release for Irish step dancers! Like the first (Kick It Up a Notch – Irish Set Dances), I’m playing all of the instruments: fiddles, mandolins, guitars, whistle, tenor banjo, and bodhran.
For Champtrax, I arranged traditional Irish music at the length and speeds for An Coimisiun champion-level competitive feis dancers. The format is designed so that dancers can practice their steps up to three times with no breaks, with a new tune at the end of each time through, and still have a definite ending. It is also useful for practice where up to three groups of dancers would start in succession after the previous group is finished their steps. Tracks 13 through 16 are longer and suitable for class practice, though the championship-length tunes 3 times through are also long enough for that purpose.
Most of the tunes on Champtrax are in the typical Irish session players’ repertoires, played in styles reminiscent of older Irish bands like The Bothy Band, De Danann, The Chieftains, Planxty, and Altan. Some unique items include finger-picked guitar lead on a trio of O’Carolan tunes for treble jigs, occasional not-so-Irish harmonies, and - since I recorded it at home with no control over outside sounds - my dog Merry barking on one of the tracks! The first person who finds the bark will receive a free copy of my set dance CD, “Kick It Up a Notch!”.
