Born from a lifelong intimacy with nada yoga, the path of union through sound, Biophile Music is an invitation from the loving heart of nature to slow down and nurture the deep connections we experience when we allow ourselves to truly listen. Blending sounds from numerous cultures and various ages creates a celebratory affirmation of human potential intended to uplift our spirits and comfort our souls, while the magic of modern technology enables one person to sound like an entire ensemble.
The term “biophilia” literally means “love of life or living systems.” It was defined by Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson in 1984 in his book of the same name to describe a psychological orientation of being attracted to all that is alive and vital. Wilson suggests that biophilia describes the connections that human beings subconsciously seek with the rest of life and the tendency to affiliate with life and lifelike processes. A biophile is anyone who aligns themselves consciously with the principles of biophilia. Biophile Music is a creative expression of these tendencies through sound, music, and the spoken word.
During a performance of Biophile Music, there are no pre-recorded sounds, tracks, or pre-prepared sonic elements whatsoever. Everything that you are hearing is played live and utilizes a real time recording technology that layers sound on top of itself called looping. As each instrument, drum, voice, or sound effect is played it gets recorded into a floor pedal that instantly plays back what it hears while continuing to capture whatever else gets sent it’s way. It is this ability that allows a single performer to create sonic landscapes that would appear as if an entire ensemble has been at work.
One of the most intriguing elements of making music in this way is in it’s relationship to the ancient techniques of shamanism and other tribal practices that would encourage and help induce higher states of consciousness through the use of purposeful repetition. Underlying musical elements of each theme end up becoming predictable and as a result of that there is a gradual relaxation of our minds and bodies into a more receptive state of being. It is within this state that collective energies begin to become much greater than the sum of their parts and create what I experience as a unifying, empowering, and resonant healing force that we can then carry back into the world at large.
It is my sincere hope that Biophile music entices you to a more authentic expression of who you are, and gracefully helps you along your path to an ever deepening awakening of your spirit. This is what it has been for me!
