Hey Folks, “The Old Mountain Boy”, Bill Phillips has taken us way back in the hollers of Appalachia once again. His new release, perfectly titled “Appalachian Blues” is a long awaited album recorded in the Blue Ridge Mountains in 1991. The album was never released, and now Bill finally has the rights to it. He considers it his favorite and most important work, other than his signature song and grammy nominated "Smokey Mountain Memories" written with the late Mel Street, and recorded by numerous country and bluegrass stars. He also was a winner in the Merle Watson Songwriters Contest right after completing this project.
Bill''s CD was critiqued by Bluegrass Unlimited, and in their words it is a collection of imagistic songs detailing an abject loneliness and life- or rather - survival - in a modern wasteland. Largely self-penned, the songs reflect more of an urban landscape then a rural one and the characters represented run the gamut from the distressed miner to the toxed-up observer in "Faces". Taken as a group, the songs express not so much a cynicism but rather a hopelessness and bleak existentialism: the individual is alone and powerless in a world that rushes by him in kaleidoscopic images that are to him as brief as they are meaningless. "Vietnam Joe" depicts a true casualty; he has returned alive but his life is now pills, beer, and dreams. Peter Rowan''s "Forest For The Trees" details the American experience and our insatiable drive for conquest of our own land at the expense of the land itself and of ourselves. Doc Watson''s "Life is Like a River" explores the simile of the sailor on the troubled sea of life who, with the aid of the boatman, will eventually reach a happy, golden shore.
This album was recorded with Bill on vocals, harmonica, and guitar and assisted by wonderful artist like Don Lewis (evocative fiddle, banjo and bass) of the Red Clay Ramblers fame, and of course Sons of Ralph, a popular touring group from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Rob Hinson (guitar and mandolin), a master instrumentalist and studio musician for many top artist. Also, Bobby Nolan (guitar), a professor of classical guitar. Stylistically, the music and vocals remind me of an area where the "Seldom Scene meets John Prine". While of very high quality, the selections are "bluegrass and country blues" by the broadest definition.
