Details:
Born in 1965, Roby Lakatos is a direct descendant of the legendary Hungarian gypsy violinist Janos Bihari, whose dynasty has influenced violin playing in the Balkans since the 18th century. Bihari was held in high esteem by the Habsburg court and played at the Congress of Vienna in 1814. His friends Liszt and Beethoven admiringly dubbed him "King of Gypsy Violinists" and the "Hungarian Orpheus". By the time Roby Lakatos was five years old, he had already been introduced to the secrets of gypsy music, by Tony and Sandor Lakatos, among others, and he gave his first public performance when he was nine. He also studied classical violin at the Béla Bartok Conservatory in Budapest. A musician of extraordinary stylistic versatility, Roby Lakatos is as much at home in classical music and jazz as he is in his own Hungarian folk idiom. He performs the widest possible range of genres with other musicians, among them Stéphane Grapelli, Giora Feidman and Herbie Hancock, as well as Vadim Repin and Randy Brecker. His playing is greatly admired by Yehudi Menuhin, who always made a point of visiting the club in Brussels where Roby Lakatos played regularly from 1986 until 1996, when his concert engagements forced him to give up his appearances there. Roby Lakatos has given concerts throughout Europe - in Germany, France, Italy, Hungary and the former Yugoslavia, as well as in Jordan and Marocco. In the 1996/97 season Roby Lakatos made his debut at the Académies Musicales de Saintes at the invitation of Philippe Herreweghe, at the Ludwigsburg Schlossfestspiele, the Rheingau Music Festival, the "Musiktage zwischen Donau und Altmühltal" in the Herkulessaal in Munich and at the Helsinki Festival. Roby Lakatos makes his American debut at the Hollywood Bowl in 1998, to be followed by an extensive tour of the U.S. Japan followed in 1999. Roby Lakatos has made regular appearances on Hungarian and Belgian television and was invited to participate in productions for Arte, 3sat, RTL, Bavarian Radio and Deutschlandradio
