When I hear Christmas music I''m always torn between dreamy childhood nostalgia and the desire to throw up. A couple of years ago I started writing a few songs of my own that expressed these divergent feelings.
I work in the OC (Orange County, California) and am both repulsed and attracted to the wealth and excess found in Newport Beach, I decided to try to write a song that reflected both with a "beachy" feel to it, thus "Christmastime in Newport Beach" was born.
The next year I wrote a Christmas song for my sister''s family. I wanted a song that the family could all join in on at the chorus (kind of like the Von Trapps in Sound of Music, but out-of-tune) without losing the beat too much. "A Love Song at Christmas" is that attempt. Give it a listen, it''s the most ''G-rated'' of the three tunes. It also highlights very clearly that I''m more of a writer than a singer.
The last song, "Secret Santa" is a 12 bar blues swing tune. I wrote it last year because I have a very dirty mind and never could find a seasonal song that seemed to reflect it. I also really love the blues and wanted an excuse to record myself playing harmonica. After listening to it, you may never relate to candy canes in the same way.
All of these songs were written and recorded in a spirit of fun and laughter. EBrian Setzernjoy!
