Someday, we all face a mid life event. It may be a crisis, an adjustment or a rebirth of some kind but life changes big time in mid life. Sometimes it''s funny, sometimes it''s ugly. But, it happens to everybody… if you live long enough.
If you haven’t been there yet, don’t panic…it''s a safe bet you''ll be there someday.
Tom was there. Friends and family were saying…”all you do is work, cut grass and watch TV....hell man, get a hobby…do something!”
Midlife…what now?
OK, get a toupee and a red Mustang, or move to Jamaica, or join the Foreign Legion or… drag out the old Les Paul from the closet, dust it off and see if it still works...it did!
Tom spent some time getting his chops back, invested in a notebook and a pen, and started to learn to write songs…something he had never done before.
But write about what?
Life looks and feels kinda different at 46 years of age than it did at 36, or 26, or 16. Not better or worse, just different.
There have been wonderful successes and awful failures. Dreams fulfilled, some satisfying and some disappointing.
Days where you feel good, days when you suffer illness. Sometimes, very painfull illness.
Some great luck, some bad luck. Good decisions and bad decisions.
Mistakes forgiven, and un-forgiven. Relationships with wonderful, loving caring people. Relationships with mean, cruel and terrible people.
Moments of strength and moments of weakness.
There must be a few songs in there, somewhere…ya think?
So, here we have a songwriter/multi-instrumentalist that is just starting out, at this tender young age.
For Tom, this is a beginning. There is much to learn, and much room for development and growth.
There are many more songs to write.
So far, so good...to start, here''s a simple thought:
We live our lives in circles, and in squares.
We talk in circles, while working in square boxes. We are encouraged to think and work outside the box, but then we go round in circles trying to explain it or do it.
We get trapped in square boxes then we run around in circles again, the same ones, over and over. We try to break out of the square box. Sometimes we can, sometimes we cannot.
We want to belong, or be in the “right” circles, then we get trapped in a square box again.
We love the safety of the square. We love the reliability of the circle.
We hate the confinement of the square. We hate the boredom of the circle.
In and out of the boxes, the confining squares.
In and out of the round, confusing endless circles.
Emotions we feel….things we laugh about, cry about, are angered about and we think about……
That’s what Tom''s music is about.
