St. Louis native Timmy Miano began writing songs and playing in the area''s bar scene when he was thirteen years old. After years of playing grunge, garage, and punk rock in dozens of bands, he broke down and got a 4-track recorder. Born from this old Tascam Porta-1, Angry Panda reared its head to showcase Timmy''s other styles without having to start yet another band.
Influenced by Ween, Beck and They Might Be Giants, Timmy learned to play all the instruments he was going to need to make Angry Panda a truly utopian band, without artistic conflict or the pressure to pander to crowds.
During his time at college he began to transpose his ecclectic recordings to a folky accoustic sound reminiscent of Johnny Cash or Tom Waits, but with the lyrical content of the Dead Milkmen and the punk rock he had grown up with. His first two albums, "Angry Panda" and "17 Songs for the Playfully Rebellious", were released on Springfield, Missouri punk label Wee Rock Records, and he began playing his satirical folk-punk to crowds of the angry, young, and poor all over the midwest.
As a festival favorite and politcal activist, Angry Panda has played hundreds of shows with no more than a loud voice, a tattered guitar, and deceptively funny songs that have been compared to "getting a twinkie full of maggots- first it seems all sweet, but when you look inside you can''t believe you didn''t see it was full of anger and meanness".
His latest album, titled "Hey, Mr. Meano!" (after a prank played by some fourth graders while he was substitute teaching), is a studio album that features some of Springfield''s most promising musicians as his backing band, the Permanent Subs- JR Top of Sweetwater Abeline, Jimi Schuchmann from the Rugs, and the ultimate side-mouser Donny Kraft.
Recorded by Lou Whitney and Eric Schuchmann at The Studio, these eleven tracks represent a new, more personal beginning for the artist whose last album was described by Neo-Zine as ""Very ranty sparse punk preachyness cut with blunt language and humor/sarcasm. Topical, with parodies of newer songs subverted to underground propaganda aimed against contemporary issues... Some of the songs play off of shocking humor, which sort of detracts from the songs that have a higher purpose (but then, I like the sicker stuff)... Pretty smart sounding stuff for the intellectually stimulated, but nothing for the virtuosos."
