Details:
Even though Andrew Field’s music falls into the roots genre, he is anything but your run-of-the-mill singer/songwriter. He is a talented storyteller, bringing with him veteran musicianship and an arsenal of influences that range from jazz and funk, rock and folk to electronica. Once the savvy frontman and guitarist for Portland-based funk fusion group, Rosewater, Andrew Field is getting applauded as one of Portland’s fastest rising singer/songwriters.

THE STORY
Andrew Field’s adventure in NW music began with the Portland-based funk fusion group, Rosewater. Assembled by Field in the 1996 the band quickly procured a substantial following in Portland. They went on to release two full-length albums, play festivals like NXNW, SXSW, the High Sierra Festival, and toured the west coast. They shared the stage with artists like Maceo Parker, Karl Denson, Garaj Mahal, and Yonder Mountain String Band, giving Field a unique chance to develop his musicianship, performance skills, and guitar playing around some of the best musicians on the circuit. But good things rarely last forever, and Rosewater and Field went on hiatus in the fall of ’03.

How many musicians walk away from a familiar genre that one, is something they’ve been very successful in, and two, is completely on the opposite side of the musical spectrum? Not that many. But Andrew Field did.

“I was really getting into a lot of roots based artists at the time, traveling, and meeting new people. My musical expressions were naturally starting to show themselves in a new kind of way. So I went with it.”

And went with it he did. He started writing a whole slough of brand new material documenting the places he had been, stories of the South, and people and places he encountered along the way. Open mics, songwriting sessions, and jams became the gig of choice as he made the transition.

Field now plays regularly around Portland at acoustic showcases, with small acoustic ensembles, and with his rocking backing band, Dusty Sedan.

With songwriters a dime dozen these days, Field knows he has his work cut out for him. But if the move from funk and fusion to roots music is any indication, this songwriter has a very bright future ahead of him. Be on the lookout for his debut album, slated for release in the latter half of 2006.
