"Amie has a remarkable talent for combining deeply pensive moods with a healing essence. After listening to one of her songs you just plain feel good"

Amie Penwell has that odd mixture of grit and polish that makes for great soul/gospel singers. It is the voice of the choirgirl who ran off with the preacher. It is a broken sob, and one that does not want for mending.

It is a voice that does not apologize for this.

It is the kind of voice that whispers secrets, soothes children, drowses chaperones and disturbs the air. The kind of voice that can make men believe they share a secret with her, even when they do not. When she speaks about her music, Penwell uses her hands to try and describe a song''s shape, like one might try to describe a piano to someone who has never left Tibet. "Most of my songs are dialogues," Penwell says. "Conversations about different aspects of truth and the many ways we relate to it." She accomplishes this with songs of great beauty, emotional intelligence, earthiness and humanity. She is the classic canary in the coalmine, in that she raises the common alarm, even as she soothes. Always, always drawing upon one, single-minded, fierce commitment: To send out the alarm only if the bell rings true.

Amie Penwell''s songs remind us of where we are perfect, and tell us the truth about where we are not.

Born in Massachusetts, Penwell migrated to San Francisco in the mid-nineties, where she honed and crafted her singular style. After spending 2003 and 2004 with Bay Area band Clevergirl, she began recording with Grammy-nominated producer Ben Leinbach. Says Penwell: "Music seems to be one of the few acceptable ways of speaking the truth. It guides, liberates, connects and transforms. At least, it continues to transform me - as long as I have the good sense to get out of the way."
