The iQuartet''s self-titled debut album features an interesting blend of the classic quartet jazz of the fifties with more modern sounds inside and outside the jazz scene. This can be seen by the musical background of the quartet''s members, consisting of high school seniors and college freshmen. Ryan Wilson (piano) comes from a classically trained background only to move into the jazz scene in the last 5 years of his 14 years playing. Anthony Green (alto saxophone) comes from a heavily jazz oriented background. David Lubliner (bass) comes from a more progressive scene having played in metal groups as well as progressive rock groups outside of jazz. Justin Bankes (drums) has played in all styles and has proved to be an extremely versatile musician. These varying backgrounds all bring together a group whose sound is both familiar and new. From the shuffle feel of the opening track "The Swingin'' Four" to the piano ballad "How My Song Bird Sings", the group delivers a solid sound varying in dynamics, style, and flavor. Most songs featured on this album are written by Anthony Green and/or David Lubliner who bring everything from modal jazz to prog rock to the table in a sophisticated style which is never excessive, rather, is presented simply as a new take on jazz. This is not smooth jazz, but this is easy listening; this is iQuartet.
