Composer''s notes:
This album was definitely not over produced. In fact it was done on a modest budget. What I am offering here are the tunes - the melodies - the emotions in which they are embodied, which I think we all share. This is a session album and there were no stars in the studio, but the guys gave it horns! If you have a story to tell about your life, chances are you will relate to the music. Some of these songs are about real people who made a contribution in the struggle against apartheid. South Africa today is a wonderful place to live, a truly Rainbow Nation!

Up where the river begins - a farmer is lamenting the loss of the love of his life. He is hoping for her return to Riverside where he waits. Riverside is situated in the Eastern Province of South Africa.

Johnny Mannenberg - Mannenberg is a gangster invested suburb in Cape Town. The song protests against the killing of young children who often get caught in the crossfire of gangster warfare.

Hey Ben - Reflects on the apartheid era in South Africa. Ben symbolizes the black man and Helmut symbolizes the government of the time. Things are much better now!

Egotistical Fool - a tribute to young married women who often have to endure their husbands'' drinking and unreliable behavior. Men only grow their beard of wisdom much later in life.

Mr Fear - is about gratitude. A man was told that his baby daughter was dead in the mother''s tummy. This turned out to be false. She left for university this year!

Circles of life poses the eternal questions - "Where do we come from?" " What is it all about?"

Old Dog - a couple are having serious problems with their relationship - then love heals it all.

Blue in an up beat way says "I''m blue without you" She has blue eyes of course.

The Ballad of Sir Richard - a true story of courtship of two young lovers. In the end they didn''t actually go to Switzerland - it was just a Swiss Restaurant!

Mother of a child - during the seventies the youth in South Africa rebelled against the government of the day. Many were killed. This song recognizes the pain the African mother had to endure.

Brother is about Abthrope Mahanga who was killed as a young man in a motor car accident. He was being chased by the South African police at the time. He had a lovely smile.
