SAMANTHA MARAIS

‘At My Door’

- album, out 10th May 2010 –

Following on from the critically acclaimed album, ‘The Peppermint Conspiracy’, Samantha Marais releases her next studio album, ''At My Door'' on 10th May 2010.

Samantha is a modern-day Francoise Hardy with an early-morning voice that rings clear and true in the same way that Joanna Newsom and Jolie Holland’s do. With the hearty spirit of Kirsty MacColl, Kate Bush and Sandy Denny and wispy, fawn-like vocals of Vanessa Paradis and Vashti Bunyan, she sleepily walks us through a Fantasia of exotic moods, bizarre imagery and anachronistic melodies, taunting us with lushly sweet and strangely powerful songs and ideas that sound ancient and fresh in the same breath.

This album sees the continuation of Samantha’s fruitful songwriting partnership with Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good, Bad & The Queen), on songs such as ‘My Eternity’ and ‘Your Lady’ and veteran blues harpist David Michaelson (who has played with the likes of Lightning Hopkins, Muddy Waters and Bill Wyman) on ‘Cool Breeze’ and ‘Home’.

Born in South Africa, Samantha started playing her brother’s guitar at the age of 7 and arrived in England at the age of 20. She honed her songwriting skills in folk clubs, bars and festivals in London and across the UK and started working with Simon Tong after being introduced to him by Youth (Killing Joke, The Orb). Simon and Youth signed Samantha to their folk label, Butterfly Records, after releasing her singles ‘Ordinary Man’ and ‘As I Roll My Rolling Ball’ on Butterfly Recordings Volume 1 & Volume 2 compilation CD’s.

Samantha lives in Bristol and hosts a radio show, Songwriter’s Hour with Samantha Marais, fortnightly on BCFM 93.2 FM (https://www.tradebit.com at 9pm on Friday evening.

Her debut album ‘The Peppermint Conspiracy’ was released in 2008 on Butterfly Recordings:

NME 7/10 Lighter than a Malteser in a flotation tank, Marais’ ethereal vocals fill rooms here with weightless, simple beauty.
The Sunday Telegraph **** By far the best album of the week, beguiling, melodic, imaginative and well worth a punt.
Mojo ***A remarkable performance...
The Skinny ****… It’s difficult to pigeonhole such an eclectic piece of work, so let’s just call it ‘brilliant.’
Shropshire Star ****…This is an outstanding work of real class. If you only buy one record this year by a previously unknown artist, make it this one. Our record of the week.
Sunday Telegraph Some critics have been complaining it’s been a rubbish year for music. But you’ve just got to know where to look. The best stuff at the moment is on the margins… Among this year’s highlights were the debuts of Samantha Marais, and Nancy Elizabeth…
https://www.tradebit.com The world is dying for people who wear their hearts so brazenly on their sleeves, to come out and wow us all … And this girl, with her voice, her emotion, may soon lead the revolution.
