Cici Porter is a critically acclaimed musician, performer, singer-songwriter and recording artist. She has received local and national music awards, and has been featured in films and television. She is also a mom, a painter, an elementary school music teacher, and an advocate for children''s safety and adult responsibility, creating a world of peace and well-being.
As a kid, Cici would take forever to fall asleep, so she kept a tiny transistor radio under her pillow, and she would fall asleep listening to songs. Consequently, she knew the words to so many songs and, when someone gave her a guitar in the fourth grade, she would sing and play relentlessly until her fingers needed Band-Aids. This compulsive behavior was the beginning of her journey to become a musician. She honed her skills, and then her first performance was singing Suzanne for her brother and his girlfriend down in the basement. “Also in elementary school,” Cici says, “I had this amazing art teacher named Lila Cress who busted me wide open to art with her utterly elegant presence. In second grade we discussed the finer elements of design as she showed us slides of cave paintings, Michelangelo, Kandinsky and Klee. I knew that music and art would be forever my passion in life.”
In high school, Cici fell in with an amazingly talented group of musicians, and they spent their time hanging around their church basement and coffee houses, swapping songs, harmonies and hormones. They formed every kind of band in every combination. She says, “I am so grateful for this community of musicians and their enduring inspiration to this day.”
Her first paying gig was singing and playing solo at a vegetarian restaurant for $25. She was fourteen years old. “With pride and joy,” she says, “I have played professionally ever since. The same year I got my first serious guitar (a Guild D-44), and my uncle bought me my first Joni Mitchell album (Song for a Seagull). I was on my way.”
As an art major in college, Cici spent her time away from classes playing in a band called Four on the Floor. After traveling around, she landed in Alaska with time and space to write songs. She says, “I just sat by a stream and snatched words and melodies right out of the atmosphere – receiving song after song. Somehow from all that solitude, I headed to Southern California. I toured with the Willie Phoenix Band, and later I teamed up with a San Diego band, Bordertown. Just like in high school, I found a bunch of fantastically musical and creative friends. My musical journey continues. I’ve played rock, pop folk, Americana and country. I’ve been very fortunate to have had so many music experiences.
"I’m still involved with music and art. And I got into child abuse prevention a few years ago and developed the Journey to Wholeness Project. I spent a few years flying around the country preaching to the choir, and then got an opportunity to make a difference for kids more directly: I started teaching music at an elementary school. It is possibly the coolest thing you could do with your life. It’s been a great and continuous journey.”
