Although it was an old dream, the idea to make this CD came after I sang with the famous Brazilian composer Toquinho. We sang the duet “Por Causa de voce” (Because of you), a Brazilian classic composed by Tom Jobim and Dolores Duran. The result was so surprising and gratifying that I finally had the courage to make my first CD.
Some of the songs selected to this CD were dedicated to my friends and relatives who had suggested their favorite’s, such as Only Yesterday and the Shadow of your Smile.
Other songs were chosen from important passages of my life. The Sound of Music is one of them. I´ve watched this movie several times since my childhood. I´m a great admirer of Julie Andrews and in 2006 I visited Salzburg (Austria). More than 40 years have passed and the city of Salzburg is still receiving annually hundreds of fans eager to do the tour that takes to the main settings of the movie.
Another song that marked my life was the beautiful song, What the World Needs Now, that appeared in a dream being played by piano one day before my departure for a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella in 1999. The lyric of this music describes the encounter with nature, the fields of wheat and maize, and above all, the main purpose and essence of the journey.
Two songs were chosen to pay tribute to the Beatles. Paul Mc Cartney appeared in my dreams several times. In one of these dreams he asked me to go back to music after months of putting the CD on the back burner, due to work commitments. On the same day of this dream, at an evening party, I met Toquinho and Genildo, his producer, who confirmed to my total surprise, that I´d participate in the CD Passsatempo. That night I mentioned to Toquinho the coincidence of the dream with Paul McCartney, telling him that I didn´t understand these frequent appearances because when I was a teen ager I always identified myself much more with John Lennon! Imagine that! But at the same moment came the insight, both Toquinho as Paul represented my romantic vein for music. The song Ao que vai chegar (To the one that will come) was chosen to honor and thank Toquinho for this unforgettable opportunity.
The song Hoje (Today) was chosen specifically to match the pitch of the voice of one of my most inspiring muses: Leila Pinheiro. One of the most exciting moments for me was the day that she came to the studio to record her track. I could barely contain my tears.
It was also a great pleasure and honor to have sung with two other great singers of Brazilian music: Jane Duboc and Joanna. Jane surprised us with her enthusiasm and generosity in the project. She contributed, in addition to her track, Outra Vez (Once more), in the back vocals of the tracks Only Yesterday, What the World Needs now and We Can Work it Out.
Another very special meeting was with Joanna, when we shared Eu e a brisa (Me and breeze). Joanna was one of the first ones to support the project and to ensure her participation in the CD.
The participation of Jozé Luis Mazziotti was another wonderful gift of this CD, His velvety and deep voice add so much to the song of our eternal great composer Gonzaquinha: Começaria Tudo Outra Vez (I´d begin all over again).
