What is this CD about? When I asked myself what the sixty years of my life was about the answer was “it’s about the people”. So that’s what the CD is about. It’s about the people.
Clare, my “new wife”, as I like to call her, is the person I best relate to … or have ever related to. This CD that pulls threads of my life together is her idea. She does not so much drive me as keep my engine tuned up so I can drive myself. Then she cruises alongside me.
Life started with another woman I loved but that was not an easy relationship. From the start Ma tried to fix me. I learned the art of trying to fix people from her and I practiced by trying to fix her. By the time she passed away two years ago I’d long given up on that. Ma was perfect as she was. Neither did she ever fix me and that was fine too.
Granny Walls was also lovely as she was. Her “front room” piano parties where everyone sang and laughed were a formative influence on my life. Even when too young to attend I would slip from my early bed and sit on the stairs listening. Daddy would also play. His dynamic yet sensitive style reflected the man. I have never escaped the effect of being the eldest son of this larger than life character nor would I ever want to.
I never met Veronica Guerin or Gordon Wilson but to put their courageous and forgiving lives alongside the infinitely loving Christ archetype, as I do in “Love Is”, is appropriate. The fact that the first two songs refer to Jesus and God respectively while the third song uses a four letter word may, I know, confuse some but let me assure you, my open minded reader, that both “You Need Do Nothing” and “The Stress Management Song” are about me letting go and trusting to a higher power.
Richard Poot (https://www.tradebit.com) produced “You Need Do Nothing” as a labour of love. From the moment he heard the song he wanted to do this. It is the highest compliment to me, as a songwriter, that someone would so dedicate his great talent to enhance my work. As did Mark Haffner (https://www.tradebit.com) with his wonderful choral style production of “The Stress Management Song”. Then there is “The Jimmy Hoffa Theme”. Mark’s arrangement raises my spirits every time I hear it. These two songs are borrowed from my two man musical “Not the Life I Ordered” which I have performed with my brother, Peter and both he and I have performed it with Andrew Pepper in London. Clare and I continue to nurture this “baby”. We plan for it to grow up before it eats the dining room table.
“Amanda” is also featured in “Not the Life I Ordered” but this version, produced by Richard Poot predates the show. The background crowd are a big bunch of fans in Finnegan’s Irish Bar in Apeldoorn. Dank je wel allemal.
Brid McKenna who features on “Down, Down Biddy” has played a big part in my life as well as my music. Those who knew us as music partners presumed we rehearsed a lot. No, we didn’t. Brid sings lead on “Sad ''n Lonely Love Song” with Neasa on backing vocals. The music of this song came to me on the death of my father-in-law, Tommy Barry shortly after the loss of my “closer than a brother” musical cousin, Harry Colley. The sudden loss of my own father nine years earlier (1968) had been too devastating to inspire music at the time but the poignant words of the chorus certainly relate to that loss. My good friend Tony Kelly wrote the beautiful third verse and added other fine touches to this song. Padraig Carroll did an arrangement way back and it influences this version very much. “Don’t Hide Your Love” began with a rhythm and somehow turned into a song.
“I Remember Well” was co-written with Brid McKenna in Belgium. You’ll again recognise her wonderful singing on this track. Brian O’Reilly (https://www.tradebit.com) has contributed many guitar tracks and much production expertise, not to mention great encouragement.
Neasa (https://www.tradebit.com) sings “Red Hat”. She and I wrote it together. We hardly knew each then and have not written much else together as we took different musical paths. Our friendship thankfully survived this diversion.
“Dance to the Rhythm of Life” was the advice Daddy would have given his twelve children. He was taken from us in a plane crash forty years ago. You can read on my website (https://www.tradebit.com) the story of how Dave Keary, the son of Daddy’s best friend, Liam Keary, appeared out of nowhere to produce this track. “Am I Wrong” also includes some Tony Kelly lyrics and Brid McKenna is backing up with vocals again. Some prefer “Love Is” as a quiet ballad so Clare and I chose this version to round off the album. Countless others have contributed to my life and this album. I am grateful for all.
