Details:
The Shawn Graham Quintet is composed of five first-class Los Angeles area musicians. This collection of songs is the result of a recording session held in February 2007. Although many months of preparation and years of inspiration went into this project, the recording was done in one day without rehearsal in order to capture the sound of spontaneous creation.

The original tunes are the results of two writers: Jack Ollodort (drums) and Shawn Graham (bass). In addition to the eight original tunes, two classic standards are included.

The title “Redefining The Standards” was selected because the tunes were recorded in a straight-ahead style true to the tradition of standard jazz. Yet each tune contains some element of redefinition, be that a fresh approach to a standard tune or a new tune.

The first song, “75”, is short and sweet. It gets to the point quickly yet covers a lot of ground musically in less than three minutes. "I wrote “75” about 10 years ago and I really don''t remember what the significance is or where it came from," explains Ollodort.

According to Graham, “The melody for “Rhythm of Glissard Assemble” was inspired by the kindness of a friend. The title was chosen by my ballet dancing wife. When I asked her what the song sounded like to her she said it sounds like the rhythm of glissard assemble and danced this ballet step to the song.”

The CDs up-tempo rendition of the Miles Davis classic, “Boplicity”, features the melody played in unison by bass and saxophone. Trumpet joins for the “B” section. Solos are by sax and piano.

Easy Street is a funky blues with a light, uplifting melody as if to say, “It’s Easy Street from here!” Sax, piano and bass solos propel this tune forward. Graham explains the origin of this as follows: “All these songs, except for one, came to me in a half-awake dream state. That one is Easy Street. I had that bass line floating around in my head for a long time. One Saturday morning I was driving my kids home from Japanese school feeling rather tired and grumpy. I just drove and kept my mouth shut since I didn’t have anything nice to say. When I got home I left my kids and wife in the car and just got out of the car and went inside. Then I heard the melody for this tune and called it "Grumpy Old Man". However, after recording it, the original title didn’t fit. Ever happy Phil changed it from grumpy to happy and the title was changed to "Easy Street.”

Morning March is an easy-going, West Coast styled tune featuring solos by trumpet, piano and bass. “When I was a kid I shared a large bedroom with my two brothers. Consequently, I’ve always been a morning person. The melody for Morning March came to me in a dream from which I awoke early in the morning,” explains Graham. "I think I stole the march part from Art Blakey," he confesses.

Every song is accompanied by one or more visual images and feelings or emotions. Generally, this is the original inspiration for the song. If something is with me long enough, this impression can change. The song “Damn Her” was originally inspired by the loss of a relationship I cared about. It was a time of pain and despair in my life. I was really angry at her. Years later I heard that she is getting married. Honestly, I hope she is happy now. I am.

According to Ollodort,”Played Out” was inspired by working with Buddy Collette. His personality is such that I was inspired to take pen to paper.” He adds, “The title was just cranked out."

For ''Bluesette'', the bass takes center stage playing the melody arco on this haunting and melancholy melody.

''Bathsheba'' is a driving, fast tempo tune. The title was chosen because the song has a middle eastern flavor.
